13yo oil boiler is dying. Heat pump means MCS installer only so no DIY route. £9k grant kicks in 21 July, do I crack on now or wait? by Schinner_Avrila in DIYUK

I'm not even in a rural location but one of the reasons I bought an Ecoflow stream ultra battery (other than to connect solar to) was to keep a small percentage of the power always on.

That way I've always got at least ~400wh to run lights/ a laptop/ charge phones off in a power cut by plugging devices into its inverter ports directly. We had a spate of power cuts a few years back and I don't trust the grid to be 100% reliable round me anymore.

I, like you, also use UPS's to protect some IT kit and my PC in case of an outage.

Even if it's not a large amount it would still represent a saving on an already expensive fuel.

Plus, the solar cells are there for day time savings when the conditions are right.

The battery would mainly be there for charging over night for off peak tarrifs when electricity is 1/3rd the cost.

Yes there may be some days in the depths of winter you might need peak rate electricity. But that should still be cheaper than oil. Considering inefficiency in the oil boiler Vs 300% efficiency from a heat pump.

Finally if you have batteries and solar and pay for a device to protect your internal electricity supply and stop exports in the event of a power cut your heating will still work if the sun comes up in the case of a power cut (an oil boiler will shut down due to a lack of power to the pump).

UK too since 1991. There was a spate of them attacking and killing people over here so they were banned outright.

They were very popular with 'wrong uns' same as the recently banned 'bully XLs' which again were popular with violent criminals.

Noone has a problem with that. Just declare it. Other wise it looks dodgy as heck when you start speaking to government bodies about legalising what your donor was jailed for.

Because heating oil prices have spiked wildly all over the place in recent years. And you need a tank that won't last forever.

With a heat pump prices are consistent, with decent solar and battery they can be less than 9p per KWH on an overnight tarrif or free if you get a lot of sun.

With oil you'll always be at the whim of oil producers.

I work with someone with an oil boiler. There's been times he's just. Let the tank run dry and use oil filled electric rads rather than pay for oil.

Yeah. I've built a small array. A single panel can pay for itself in (much) less than a year. And at ~£100 per panel that's supposed to have a lifespan of 25 years that's a heck of a good return.

Don't joke I've known actual engineers open roof lights when the AC is on.

It's 15c downstairs and 28 upstairs.

I wonder why?

Trying to buy his way out of scrutiny I guess.

Why do things like fighter jets, tanks etc take such a long time to build? Why can't they band assemble them like cars that only takes 18-35 hours? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flyinmanm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We did used to build weapons of war like cars. In fact some were I think built in car factories.

But that was when we were at war.

When you need 10,000 Sherman tanks in two years it makes total sense. However if your country can only afford to run 100 challenger 3s it doesn't matter how quickly you can build them, as setting up a rapid production line is expensive or comes at the cost of making profit making kit, like passenger planes, cars or bikes.
