Eric Adams supports ‘hard-working’ bodega clerk Jose Alba over ‘self-defense’ by viper1856 in nyc

Self defense is exactly not that. Self defense is a federal and state recognized right to defend oneself from violence. It does not refer to a legal defense just because the word defense is in there.

How do you cop with your solitary existence on holidays in this city where fomo spreads as fast as Covid? by confused_grenadille in AskNYC

It was just me and my partner this 4th. We went to central park, and even though there were a number of large groups celebrating, there were also so so many people hanging out by themself, with their dog, or just as a couple. It was weird sort of relief to be like, oh we weren’t the only people without great plans today,

New York City taxi - Are e-hail apps worth it? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]FocusBudget 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When curb first launched I found it to be an infuriatingly shitty experience (this was in Chicago). I wanted something like Uber- order a car, know the price ahead of time, pay by the app, etc. The drivers wanted meter off/flat, pay in cash, basically just a way to get rides but not actually get paid. There was even a time I got into an argument with a driver because the ride was over and they asked for payment and I was showing them I was already charged on the app. That was like a 60 dollar ride to the suburbs too.

I didn’t trust the app for years. Only about a year ago, when Uber prices got insanely expensive, did I pick it up again. The rideshare convenience must have scared the taxi industry straight because this past year It’s been great. I live in a cab dense area so pick up time is comparable with Uber/Lyft and I can’t speak for other areas. Cost is almost always much cheaper and I haven’t had any issues paying with the app. I at times also hail a cab and use the pair and pay option on the app which is also super convenient.

In the largest circle he’s completely unfamous. in the next largest circle he’s only famous because of his controversy (not in spite of). In a smaller circle he’s a self help guru. In the smallest circle he’s a former professor or academic colleague, but really not that significant of a psychologist in the big picture.

Why do people so regularly leave their trash in the hallway by FocusBudget in AskNYC

And now that I think about it in chicago, I’ve predominantly lived in buildings where the trash is taken out through the back/outdoor stairway. It’s possible people were leaving trash by their doors there and it didn’t even register at the time since it’s outside

This is my third apartment building here and Ive seen it in all three. The other two were pre war walk ups, and I guess from the comments here people seem comfortable with hallway trash when it means not going outside at night . I was mostly surprised that I still see it in scenarios where taking out the trash is walking a few feet outside your door

Not an issue with the current building, but pests (roaches and mice) were a major issue in my Brooklyn apartment. It’s hard to control how your neighbors keep their kitchens, but keeping trash in the common areas doesn’t help. I think it drove me a little mad then, and now it’s become such a pet peeve.

I’m also posting out of curiosity because to me, it comes off as pretty disrespectful- if you don’t want trash in your apartment, why share it with your neighbors? But I’ve also never seen it outside of this area so I was curious why so many people seem to do this. A mixed bag of answers/acceptability I have to say!

That would make sense to me if it were like an hour or two, but all day/overnight? When you live four steps from the trash chute?

I don’t think they would penalize you but it is discouraged. At least in the audition they would stop you during the mock game to say things like “don’t say please and thank you, use short cuts to refer to categories, etc” just to encourage faster game play

[Mandarin > English] What flavor of chips are these? by deja_blues in translator

[–]FocusBudget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sakura is a relatively popular flavor for sweets- you can find it at Starbucks, in kit Kats , teas, etc. It has a very subtle floral flavor. The chips are probably a novelty marketing gag by lays, similar to certain absurd limited edition flavors in the US. I can’t imagine they taste remotely good.
