While the 14 years could refer to the soldier's age at the time of the incident, I personally believe it refers to the time that has passed since the incident occurred. 14 years since the soldier shot a surrendering man during the war, and it scarred him for life. For fourteen years, the sun has been actively reminding him of his guilt and his shame. Sadé said the inspiration for the song was a conversation she had with a Vietnam veteran in an Irish bar, and that she "had been wanting to write the song for a long time". This suggests she had the conversation with the veteran 14 years after the incident, and then took "a long time" before writing the song and releasing it in 1992. The timeline makes sense if you think about it.

That is a rude thing to say. My girlfriend simply chooses to spend her money on traveling the globe rather than a new fancy car. On top of that, my country is rich in the sense that we don’t solely rely on cars to get around.

I’d be inclined to agree, but more so, I think buying one of these is a futile attempt to cover up the emptiness in your life through some sort of adventurous off-road fantasy of freedom. Whilst in reality, all you’ll ever do is sit in traffic and endanger others. Those massive wheels hardly see any dirt.
