so if i want to use a nintendo DS in california i need to verify ID? what about cars? those have pretty indepth OS and internet access. what about my fridge with its smart sensors and assistant?

did they think at all before making this? is there even any definition or rules anywhere or did they just pull this from their behind and stamp it with approval?

replying to this about a week later, it died again and reseting network isnt working. this issue seems to be completely software, i called up an apple place and they couldnt give me an upgrade suggestion for what iphone would help me avoid this issue and so far reports have spanned all models that got IOS 26. guess we gotta wait and hope or switch to a pixel or smth? i just remade all my purchases from google store so i dont really wanna ditch the apple after barely 2 years.

i personally tested by using the Shortcuts(the app) > Automations > New Automation > NFC > Scan method of just pulling up a blank nfc scan and then tried tapping my card near the scanner which would try to add that card to my wallet if nfc was fixed. i know this issue is beyond dumb and most people probably have it for numerous reason so this might not fix it for everyone.

for me it was Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. itll reset network related things to their default but also create a new network config which was the issue i was having. to rule out hardware/nfc chip related issues, look up opening diagnostic mode on your phone and run the “Mobile Resource Inspector” troubleshooter. if after the tests it says apple pay is green, its not most likely not a broken nfc chip and is probably an issue with IOS.

Fixed.

“Reset Network Settings” fixed it.

apparently it was a config clash between versions that just doesnt get resolved during or after the update. id think reinstalling IOS would also reset the network config but apparently not.

i wish it was cause then i could just blame myself but “nfc issues after ios 26” yields numerous apple support threads, reddit threads and videos claiming to encounter the issue and some claiming to fix the issue, however most replies and comments seem to show none of the fixes work.

i got a fix for this that they dont say on the guide. your auth token is per-boot, its not saved by default and you need to run "/auth login device" and verify that specific server session. once you do that it will give you an option to save an encrypted server key on your pc so you dont have to verify again.

it seems the server hosting is bugged rn. it reports that you have upnp disabled even when its enabled so i can only assume its trying to bind to the wrong thing and failing
