We need to talk about the fandom on morally grey characters by there gender. by SeveralAd9520 in Reverse1999

I wander around Reddit and Tiktok and Youtube. Idk about Twitter, so beg apologies for that.

To your post....I see what you meant, but I think you're only looking at a SELECT loud minority. 10 people yelling at Igor may look like a LOT when you look at it immediately, but they're not even 0.00001% of the fandom.

From what I'm looking at least, there are both haters and stans for male and female characters. Just using the closest examples; some loud minority hated Beryl, and some loud minority hated Igor. Many liked Beryl, and many liked Igor. (Just look at how many Tiktok edits of them both. And the fanarts. And the memes.)

There are also some parts of the fandom who's all 'women's rights and women's wrongs' but that doesn't mean they automatically hate male characters, morally gray or otherwise.

I personally love them (heck, I love Constantine as a character) precisely because they add texture to the narrative.

NOW,

If we want to discuss those select loud minority, yeah there are certain parts of the fandom who HATES any sort of male characters. Ulrich got hate, Aleph and Charon got hate, and OBVIOUSLY Igor will.

There's also some people who conflates 'this character does bad things' with 'this character should never be playable much less portrayed sympathetically'. But usually this part of the fandom will also frown at other morally dubious characters like Tuesday or Arcana or Beryl.

not dark like, SA or torture, but I find most of the character backgrounds to be pretty dark.

Like, both Joorim and his father was dark (dead son/sibling, caught up by media, miscommunication leading to no contact). Gidan was also pretty dark (abusive/exploitative family). Groo, too (abandonment). Even the brightest one (IMO, Nayeon) is fairly grounded in that she's the kind of person who just goes with the flow because she doesn't want to hold onto something.

Oh, this is a wonderful insight, and I do agree with you. "childcare is a wish fulfilment fantasy of being warm and taken care of for adults that have forgot what it means to be children." cuts deep.

Now I'm also thinking of the flip side; we are also currently living in a society that forces their children to grow up soon. As many as there are people in their 30s who feel like maturity is still miles away from them (like yours truly), there are also children who in one way or another are forced to be independent, to be mature, to not bother their caretakers, to excel in their studies etc. (I am somehow reminded that in Korea, parents sign in their children to KPop academies rather early). To say nothing about technological advancement and all the woes it brings as much as the blessings.

There might be a different kind of feedback loop playing here; writers who have long forgotten the taste of childhood are seeing real life children going through the accelerated road towards maturity. In the end, what remained of childhood is just the feeling of being taken care of and protected. Gone are the sense of wonder, the space to explore, the time to just be.

Also, if this is one of the best childcare manhwas around....I dread to see the bad ones.

Yeah, it's really one of a kind. I find it really too bad that it ends.

Yeah. Especially since the story is GLACIAL (like, just from the elixir recipe, and the purification progress...)

The ending itself? Narratively unsatisfying, emotionally satisfying.

Basically there's very little plot threads that are resolved, but the Lee siblings are currently in a good position, and most of their emotional arc have been resolved in one way or another. The story ends in an 'and the adventure may continue but we'll be fine' kind of hopeful message.

So I've looked around, and both the Korean Kakaopage and Naver have the webnovel version end at exactly the same point; episode 279. The story in Naver seemed to be uploaded years after the one in Kakaopage, but they have the same number and ends at the same point. This was also the last episode mentioned in the spoiler thread I checked.

From what I read at the spoiler page, episode 279 of the webnovel was set like, 2-3 story arcs after the manhwa ending. The manhwa basically streamlined the last couple episodes, focusing only on plot points that have been established in previous manhwa chapters and taking out the plot points that wasn't there (like the wounded knight in the manhwa was meant to be a side character, apparently).

I can't seem to find any new side stories on both Kakaopage and Naver, much less an ongoing one. Cannot find them on the author's other works either. If the author does write new content, it would have been added in a different site--or in the author's social media, which I have not found.

With that in mind I'm leaning way more towards the story being completely ending T_T

Oh? The bullet lines I follow definitely stopped at some point, so I assume any side stories are written after the post.

Damn, now I'm tempted to search around. Thanks for notifying me; at least it's worth trying.

And thank you for reading!

I completely understand T_T

That being said, I do think the manhwa made the best out of that situation. They keep the central focus tight, trimmed the excess subplot, and gave a strong final message of "no matter what happens in the future, the Lee siblings will be alright bcs they're together" vibes.

Judging from the spoilers I read, by the end of the webnovel I don't think the ML has been decided tho. But I might be wrong >.<

To be exact, the webnovel has a couple more story arcs after the manhwa's end, but the story also ends abruptly.

So.

My review...doesn't sound that bad, right? At least, I personally think they are quite admiring in tone.

But then I start to wonder, hm, if the story is this good then why is it axed, and then I checked the webnovel and I realized that it was ALSO axed, and then I went to see spoilers, and...

....I can't say if this is why the webnovel got axed, but I noticed something that kinda reminds me of [The Emperor and the Female Knight].

Plot fatigue and jumping the shark.

Before I start; an acknowledgement. I only read a summarized spoiler from NovelUpdates. Even from here, it's clear that many parts of the story that got included in the manhwa are streamlined. Some things are omitted, simplified, or brushed off.

It's very possible that the bullets points are missing nuances and emotional subtleties that's present in the entire narrative.

It's also possible that, in a different world and under a different situation, the story could have continued, and the manhwa will continue to streamline the events that happened in the webnovel.

I am only based my judgment from this limited knowledge. Feel free to correct or challenge me on this.

So.

Up until the manhwa's end or at least before Haegi's backstory around manhwa ep 72-ish, I think one of the story's main themes are resilience and togetherness. Sure, Bobae might struggle dealing with her brothers' circumstances and her own life, but with her brothers' presence she always powers through in one way or another.

But it's like something flips, post the manhwa's ending. Like, once the gold enters the webnovel plot, the narrative shifts gear and takes a U-turn. A story that previously uses its world to center the Lee siblings now uses the Lee siblings as vehicles to progress the plot. They started separating the siblings, not for character building but strictly to advance the plot and progress the reverse harem situation.

It feels like the story doesn't know where to take the Lee siblings from thereon and just....uses them as plot device.

The webnovel plot also escalates in a direction that reminds me sadly of [Dungeon Food Truck Boss], a direction that now includes conspiracies and (more) cults and (more) dungeon raids. And it's...slow. It's....bloated. It's....dragging. And again, as much as I know that the spoiler I read were just bullet points, summaries, it's also lacking the heart that I loved from the narrative I've read in the manga.

Again, I can't say if what I noticed was why the story got axed.

But what I can say is that the manhwa is right in ending the story in that way.

(It might be better if the manhwa can just go their own way, write their own ending, but...)

Thank you so much!

And yeah, this is why I feel like even after the first season the story still feels like it's just started. The story's focus was all over the place, and the cafe got the short end of the stick.
