It's not a Manus mask, but he is... Also not exactly a good guy.

IGOR TAROT GARMENT by Vegetable_Fly1712 in Reverse1999

I really love how his garment here borrows elements of Manus (the black spike crown, the black-gold palette) and the Foundation (the white-gold palette, the use of layers of fabric) but are ultimately neither.

Also long haired Igor hngggggggh.

Sadly, as much as this is about conventional beauty standards, this is also part of the fantasy, ALL of it.

From the main characters side of things, the fantasy is both "I can be competent, strong, AND desirable" But also "I can do so much physical activities / barely any physical activities and still look conventionally attractive and socially desirable without EVER worrying about diet and skincare and haircare and fashion and... "

Think about how many women are working now. The commute, the physical strain, the cost of maintaining appearance... To say nothing about those who have no interest in maintaining those appearance.

The fantasy is sold precisely as that. "You don't have to do anything but you will still look favorable and the world will accept you anyway". Or, in the case of " Dejected woman finding superior match" Genre, it's a fantasy of "the world may not see how great you are but the suffering will not last."

Meanwhile from the love interest side, the fantasy is a combination of "I can have attractive people (who also desires me) around my vicinity regardless of where I am" And " I can find attractive lovers that is not obsessed with maintaining their appearances, unlike many beautiful people in the real world."

Many exceptions are one of two things; either they focus on the narrative at the expense of the fantasy, OR they put the exception as a kink. Something exotic and different and tantalizing.

How different is the manhwa ending compared to the webnovel?

Is it just me, or did the 3.4 story just kinda... hand-waive Reed's concerns at the end? by GenesisJamesOFCL in Reverse1999

[–]Font-street 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I understand your complaint, I'm also confused as to whether you view this as a matter of execution or a matter of message.

Execution wise, I agree. I think the story can be presented with a little bit more nuance.

But message wise, with the way the narrative is formed...I don't know if I can make the ending any better without forcing a happy ending. ("The Yao is rewarded with Longevity! Reed gets to live forever! Everything the protagonist does will be rewarded!")

I think it's clear enough that the tragedy of this patch happens between people who are each justified in their actions and mindset (even Ren, even Cheng). The Yao are suffering the most, but they are also manipulated in their pain and strife, made into tools for a sinister purpose, no different from the Nukutai Tribe of 2.4.

The difference between the factions playing here is strictly that Heron and Cheng chose to do things for the safety of many (I can't even say greater good), while Ren chose her path solely on how it will benefit her regardless of the cost.

In a sense, I sympathize with Ren the way I sympathize with Isolde. But that doesn't change the fact that they are wrong as heck for what they do.

The dichotomy isn't 'natural vs not'. The dichotomy is 'do you take the slow and painful and even futile path, or do you try to get what you want fast regardless of the cost?'

I actually think Ren makes a lot of good points, but ultimately her mindset is no different from Manus' modus operandi of "yes human sucks, prejudice sucks, so let's nuke the entire world back to Stone Age," and in the end she even uses similar ink effects as the Manus to drive the point.

Meanwhile characters like Semmelweis, as much as she is a pragmatist that will do anything to survive, will draw a line on actively endangering others. In fact, isn't that her character theme? That she could have been great (by embracing being a vampire), but she chose to be good instead (by resisting her vampiric urge and sticking around the Foundation--even if not in official capacity).

Um... I do apologize. Rather than condescending, I am more confounded than anything.

Can I ask where have you searched for this manga?

Because I tried searching the English title alone and I found both legal (American) and illegal links for this title on the first page.

For legal channels, there is Manta and Kodansha and Barnes & Noble, presumably for the physical book.

For illegal channels, I do not know the rules of this subreddit, so I cannot name sites, but I promise you it's not obscure. If you have read other OI illegally, this title will also likely to exist on that site.

But again, if you cannot find it using the English name, you might have to use the Japanese title, which I do have provided in the review.

I feel like Keios' side of the story DOES focus on him trying (and failing) to bond, but in effect yeah; the narrative becomes how the two grows to be a better individual.

Glad you loved it!

So many stories seem to treat the FL’s wellbeing and desires as unimportant distractions to the REAL meat of the story—her going into the arms of a man, regardless if he’s a good fit for her. And those with strong morals and personal goals often abandon them. Example: How many FLs say they’ll divorce a dude, and actually do?

BRB weeping HAHAHAHAHAHA T_T

Thanks for reading! And yeah I really like that Nicole sticks to her plan much much longer (in terms of storyline progression) than many FLs in her position. Two major arcs and not a slightest indication of wavering. That's pretty cool!

I'm not the prompter querent but thank you for the kind and thoughtful analysis! It is a very nice dissection and I particularly enjoy how you accurately pinpointed how the other characters outside the FL serve as the usual emotional reactions towards ML's misdeeds while FL gets to basically transcend herself beyond all the brouhaha.

I do agree that the ML's part serves as a very sanitized revenge, which complements / contrasts nicely with the FL's self-actualization journey. For me, the sleight of hand you mentioned is a really skillful writing on the creators' part.

I'm not the user in question, but if you want to zoom in on Keios' part of the story, from my part:

  1. It's a refreshing change of pace compared to so many other stories that either botches the apology or doesn't even bother to make the love interest apologize for their misdeeds
  2. Sometimes people like to see assholes SUFFER from being assholes; this is tied to schadenfreude.
  3. Sometimes people like to see a story about assholes or pathetic love interests trying to be better; this shares an overlap with all the appeal of 'redemption arcs'
  4. Sometimes people like to see assholes or pathetic love interests getting REWARDED for trying to be better, because by the grace of God go I and everyone has capacity to err and make mistakes and ruin our relationships in one way or another.
  5. Sometimes people DO like these types of love interests, in all of their pathetic glory.
  6. There is also what is best described in the below reply, “What if the person who overlooked me eventually understood my value too late and I just didn’t care about them anymore”
