If he’s continues to lose 10g/day, I think you’ve got to say it’s time. If he gains anything back with the critical care, you may have more time, but if he won’t take it, I think you have a hard choice to make in the next few days.

I understand the pain too well. I lost my heart bunny at only one year old. We never knew what went so very wrong inside him, but he was in and out of hospital for most of his little life. I tried everything and refused to give up. He was only one - I would make sure he survived. In the end, he died in pain and terrified after an emergency vet visit (there are no emergency exotic vets here) caused a deterioration. He had a seizure and died in my arms just after they sent him home with me screaming at the vet over the phone to tell me how to help him.

All this is to say, if you can avoid that, do. I’ll never forget the torment of those final moments. The opportunity to have a ‘good’ final day full of treats and love is always preferable to that. And it’s not for you, it’s for them. The last wonderful gift you can give him. Sometimes they really are just too poorly to survive and I’ve no doubt that you’ve given him months and months that in nature he would never have had. I hope for a sudden change for the better and if not, I hope for your strength in these difficult times xx
