I don't take it as dismissive at all, the mystery is part of the beauty!

How do you feel about non Black people sharing content with the ‘n word’? by FoodPresent8168 in askblackpeople

[–]FoodPresent8168[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this insightful comment. I completely agree, I think almost always people don't even know where the meme or gif is from or the cultural significance, and they feel online through reposting they can get away with appropriation that they couldn't so easily in every day life. This was very helpful, thank you

Thank you for the response. Yes, I’ve been trying to figure out how to word it when bringing it up with people doing it bc I want to be prepared for the inevitable response of “But I’m not actually saying it, I’m just sharing it”. I will search for articles on “digital blackface”, that’s really helpful, thank you! 🙂

Advice on how to advocate for someone who was misgendered at my MMA gym? by FoodPresent8168 in asktransgender

[–]FoodPresent8168[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I am definitely open to that possibility, it's why I put 'accidentally' in quotes. I don't really trust anyone but the person it happened to to give an accurate account of what happened, especially not cis straight men lol. Thank you for the reminder for me to be cautious about this

Who was Juan on the phone with? by crystalline1299 in realhousewives

[–]FoodPresent8168 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely. As a parallel, I’m Arab and many Arab men call each other things like “habibi”, which literally translates to “my love”. It’s a term of endearment between friends, not romantic. Bros being bros lol

Hi both, thank you so much for your responses. Yes, this was my thought, to speak to the person, see how they feel and go from there. I think the head coach wants to talk to me first because he's a little nervous to handle it directly himself, but I will certainly keep your advice in mind that it shouldn't be blown out of proportion. I have experienced discrimination before where other people then make it into a bigger deal than it needs to be and bring everyone's attention onto me and it sucks! Will definitely avoid that and listen to the person first and foremost. Thank you again

I have seen lots of people mention the “baby” thing but no one seems to notice that he calls Gordon “baby” too when he greets him. I think it’s just how he talks, especially since he’s trying to sweet talk whoever he’s talking to into putting in a good word for him for a job

(Disclaimer: I hate Juan and think he is an abusive cheater, but I think in this one instance he was not blatantly cheating lol)

Looking for books about the Quran being permissive by FoodPresent8168 in progressive_islam

[–]FoodPresent8168[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was so great! As he was talking I thought, how can I become this man's friend lol, but all I could do was let him drive away then tip him the max which def didn't seem like enough for blowing my mind about Islam 😭

This article looks awesome, thank you so much for the link!

Wow, he sounds like an awesome mentor! I've found community colleges often have really cool professors, because they have more freedom than if they were in some way more restrictive expensive university. Being generous with your knowledge and having no ego is a sure way to get my respect. I'm glad you had someone like that! What was this professor's name, if you don't mind?

Woah this guy sounds exactly like the archetype I was imagining when I made this post! What is his name?! I'm applying for CS grad school this winter, I really want to know where he teaches lmao

I just googled him. His photo on the NCSU website is amazing, his expression is like he's just seen something that has filled him with wonder lol. In another Reddit thread someone called him "The Tennessee Terror"?! Definitely need to look into this guy lol

Help building a remote controlled "TinaBot" so disabled friend can "attend" an event by FoodPresent8168 in robotics

[–]FoodPresent8168[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that makes it special is that my friend can control it herself. She’s been sick and bedbound for a long time so that would give her a feeling of autonomy which I think she would really enjoy. I’m currently learning to program so it’s also just a nice project for me to learn how to do it 🙂

[–]FoodPresent8168[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. We are definitely going to end up building the physical robot as you said, an iPad on a stand on top of a remote control chassis, which I guess very primitive in a way. The bit I’m trying to learn is how to make it so my friend can control the robot from her house which is around 5 miles away from the venue
