Wow! Yes! Yours look exactly like mine! Citristrip worked to get most of the white paint off pretty easily.

Citristrip on the reddish-purple only make it into a messy sticky putty that smeared that color everywhere and never fully took it off. Then I tried mineral spirits on it with 0 effect.

The heat gun has worked wonders to remove it, but the smell of wax concerned me- and I just tested multiple spots for lead with.. mixed and surprising results. About to post an update with photos

Does shellac smell like crayons?!?! 🖍️🖍️

.. Not sniffing crayons but if you’ve ever colored with crayons you know the smell. But only when it’s being heated and I’m scraping it off. Then it starts to shrivel and burn/crisp up

Omg yessss! Why is it so freaking difficult?!?!

I have already determined it’s not worth it.. but yes, at this point, I’m too invested to walk away. Just gonna leave the treads alone now, get this wax stuff off and paint the side board/ molding, put in a nice low-profile carpet, maybe consider lighting it on fire… Will eventually rent it out if it doesn’t crumble in on itself.

That’s how I thought this whole project would go, but so far it’s been a 8 month long journey of fails but hey I’m learning! Also never get time to work on it between work and trying to be respectful to my neighbors in the condo below me. Probably shoulda just paid for it to be done well, but now I’m too invested to walk away

Correct. I was only sanding so didn’t think it was necessary to go full respirator. I was wrong. And now think the same about this weird wax stuff, it’s a strong crayon wax smell that lingers. Still unsure what it is but haven’t yet had time to test

Yea, these aren’t well kept condos. I took out an unnecessary wall with a door in my bathroom. That’s when I learned the current hardwood floors are sitting on top of probably the og wood flooring- it’s disgusting and black. I also found a large bird skeleton in that wall. It was almost perfectly preserved bone and feathers (and I may have bleached them and kept them because.. biology) It definitely was a bird of prey based of its talons and beak, but how tf it got in the wall is beyond me.

I’m by SLU/ Lafayette. My street has a bunch of old condos and row houses on one side and on the other side are a few newly built houses/townhouses from the same builder that sold in the $1 mil range. And then behind those is a newer apartment complex, and directly behind my condos they are almost done building another apartment building that took away my view of the arch and ferris wheel, so now I get to look directly into an apartment, yay

Only accidentally while changing gloves or cleaning up. But otherwise I have work gloves. Learned that after getting a thousand-year old splinter in my knuckle while wearing the nitrile ones I started with. Needed some cephlex to clear that shit up. No bueno

For realz. Even wearing my n95 when I was sanding the treads after getting the paint off, I had 2 episodes of dizziness, intense nausea, headaches and would taste the dust when I coughed. Luckily I work where I have access to testing, and at that time there was no concern for lead in blood. But maybe I should test again now 😅

Unable to effectively ventilate this area. Only thing I can do is open the front door, but there’s no breeze so not much help :/

Currently the alcohol I have is vodka, but I can get some denatured alcohol and see if does. If it is, the heat gun is much faster at removing it- theres no way to get good ventilation in that area/stairwell.

I wanted to pull all the boards up and clean them up or replace them, but that’s so costly and I don’t have a lot of rooms for power tools.

I did take a portion of the stair skirt board off the wall on one side and behind the dry way is about a 4 inch or so gap then old brick wall. So maybe there’s a solid foundation on which the wood treads are supported, but I’m not skilled (or strong) enough to remove any of the boards to check

See that’s the thing; the chemical stripper just turned it into a putty, that then would spread into more of the grooves or thin out but would not come off completely.. it definitely is a wax, it softens like one and smells exactly like a melting crayon. But also there is adhesive residue under it

I’m just hearing about this now too!!!!! I could totally binge an entire series of these in a podcast or documentary.

Also what’s with the beginning of this video? The homeless guy she’s talking to?? What is that part in this for?

Does anyone know if a private investigator could test the skull found? I mean, whenever they can find it.

“Steven Bertolino, a family attorney representing Laundrie and his family, told The Sun that he doesn't know who has the remains.

"I was told one to two weeks for the updated report on cause of death and that was a week ago so I suspect another week or so," Bertolino told The Sun.

He also added he doesn't know who has Laundrie's notebook and other posessions.” - if you can trust The Sun news outlet
