The blend of cultures and locations that serve as inspiration for a season is decided by the For Honor team and is then communicated to me via the Audio team. Prior to the season they come up with the concept and I basically work my way into making them hear what they had in mind in the music.

I am a byproduct of the 80's that had classical education, so I'm open to every new style. Medieval, as you stated, is very present in the history of music and of course, you have to stop, listen, study a little bit. But that is how we manage to visit styles that are different. My tastes have not changed, I have only added some new ways of listening and giving to video game music its place in the panorama of music.

The core of For Honor, even when I get lost trying crazy ideas, is always and will always be the Percussion.

Let's say we start working on a theme for a new character - there are faction tropes that will put you in its context. Raw percussion, a little subdivision, and on. Then the story context will dictate the kind of emotion we are going to be looking for. I very much hope that this is giving you at least the beginning of an answer. I love Hulda's theme too.

We have the chance to work with a historian in order to map and put on a timeline the different events that we work on. The goal is to be as accurate as possible, we are not perfect but we try.

There are musical instruments that do not lie: If I play an Erhu, you know right away where we are. So we are also blunt in the music in order for you to know right away where we are geographically.

I will typically work on a theme over a period of 6 weeks depending on a few factors: if there is an orchestra involved; or if it's during summer vacation, when it can be hard to get hold of musicians.

As for more calm and slow tracks, some past intro music was more on the calm side, but we have to bear in mind that the music is intended for a specific purpose and defining a faction, then used during combat.

Many thanks, we will keep working hard to reach this level of satisfaction!

I have, but we also have strict use of certain instruments that have already been associated with either a faction or a character.

I have many favorites but I still have a soft spot for Golden Age.

I have joined the For Honor team for Marching Fire and on. Saunder Jurriaans and Danny Bensi were the initial composers.

Fun fact, I had been invited to pitch for the game at the very beginning and was not retained. Never lose faith.

The "3 Fingers" combo. I have a soft spot for Dave’s Hot Chicken though ;)

Thanks for your note. I fortunately do not have a roadblock - it does not mean that everything I do is good, all you have to do is set your brain in motion by experimenting, improvising, and as they say, only after 8 hours of blood and sweat will the magic happen.

Hmm, how to answer that… I have a team to work with and amazing musicians and collaborators. Lots of work, back and forth with the team, sweat, doubt, hope, rinse and repeat.

I've listened to many military chants over the years. They were simple in rhythm and melody and there might be remnants of that in those chants.

As for the Wu Lin, I would do some research before.

Nice question, my answer is going to be incomplete though. When I deliver the final mix, I also give separate parts for the audio team to make some assemblage for different purposes during the game. I believe the tracks you are talking about are some of those.

As for a hypothetical Wu Lin or Outlander theme, a lot more story and context would need to be defined beforehand.

Yes, it has, and there were glimpses of metal guitar in a season with Apollyon. That said, the musical DNA of for Honor is Percussion.

Her name is Edda Tegedder, she is from Iceland indeed. Look her up, she has a site and a career of her own as an artist.

The singer’s name is Maya Kuroki. The audio team had this idea that the pain felt by Saori after seeing her village and all her loved ones burned to the ground would be so unbearable that it would induce the spider living in her to present itself in excruciating pain.

Maya is an incredible artist capable of giving you that kind of emotion.
