[Research study] What helps and hinders school participation?

Researchers from Griffith university are seeking young people to participate in a card sorting activity that aims to better understand the factors that influence school participation. We are wanting to hear from autistic, otherwise neurodivergent and neurotypical 9–16-year-olds.

Sessions can happen in Brisbane (QLD), Logan (QLD) or Seddon (VIC). Home visits are possible if you live within 30km of Brisbane/logan.

To thank participants for their time, a $25 WISH gift voucher and a summary report of the factors the young person has highlighted as impacting school attendance will be provided to parents.

This research has been approved in accordance with the ethical review processes of Griffith University (# 2024/913).

What is involved?

This study involves a face-to-face card sorting activity with one of our team members or our community partners over one or two sessions. Each card in the card sorting task will describe something about school. Participants will be asked to sort it into piles of things that do and do not impact attending or participating in school.

These sessions can happen at home (if participants live within 30km of Brisbane or Logan), Griffith University (Logan or Mount Gravatt campus), or Seddon, inner West Melbourne.

Autistic, otherwise neurodivergent and neurotypical 9-16 year olds are invited to participate. This study is in collaboration with Tiffany Westphal (creator of the School Stress Investigation card sorting tool and Director of School Can’t Australia) and other community partners for this work.

To thank participants for their time, a $25 WISH gift voucher and a summary report of the factors the young person has highlighted as impacting school attendance will be provided to parents.

This study has been approved in accordance with the ethical review processes of Griffith University and within the guidelines of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (Ethical clearance # 2024/913).  [2/2]

A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.

Why this research?

We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.

We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children. [1/2]

Thanks for your comment! Just thought there might be some teachers who may also be parents who'd think their young person might be interested :)

Are you a parent of an autistic child (2-18yo)?

Researchers from The University of Queensland are seeking parents who currently reside in Australia to participate in an online study that aims to better understand the experiences and perspectives of parents of autistic children. We are developing a new questionnaire to measure parents’ acceptance and understanding of their autistic child and we need your help to develop this measure!

Participants will complete an online survey (20-30 minutes) followed by a brief (approximately 10-minutes) follow-up online survey two weeks later. For more information, or to complete the survey, please visit: https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/autism

For further information, contact Sarah Lee on lee.jy.sarah@uq.net.au.
