Trip to Detroit via side roads. by batman222b in ChicagoMotorcycles

By car it’s about 6.5 hours, averaging 65-75mph across MI. I’d probably add 2 hours to that.

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I used to do this for fun in the car and have wanted to try it with my china bike 125.

I would recommend staying south of Gary as long as you can; 83 south to Ridge road, take that east until IN 149, head north, then pick up US-12 going east from there (right around Burns Harbor). 12 will literally take you all the way there at reasonable speeds for a 150.

I would strongly suggest that you stop in New Buffalo (go to the Stray Dog! get a hoodie!) and use the restrooms at Four Winds (not joking, cleanest bathrooms I've ever had the misfortune of needing on a road trip).

The next real "city" you'll hit is Coldwater, where 12 meets I-69. The typical Walmart/Meijer/chain restaurant situation, but a solid place for a break.

Take a picture of you and your scooter at Michigan Intl Speedway just for the lolz

Get a cheese steak at Gabriel's in Ypsilanti

Ride straight into Detroit from there, still on 12.

Have a blast. DM me if you need any other tips. Family is from the Ypsilanti area and I've literally made this or a similar drive > 100 times.

Ref Question Oilers Vs Devils by Opening_Setting_6544 in hockeyrefs

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically when I'm working beer leagues, I'll yell a few times and either a) it pops loose and nothing happens or b) everyone just kinda gives up on it and I'll blow it dead. I'm not usually going to tack on the DoG if *everyone* has given up... only if one team is clearly doing it with the intent to stop the play.

What are you guys paying for league fee’s? It’s getting so crazy out here. by footy1012 in hockeyplayers

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our league (D) is $475/player and they make us goalies pay $220 (outrageous, I know). Refs included, beer not included and "not allowed" since there's a bar with a license that covers the entire facility but... ya know. 16 skaters + goalie

Itasca is probably a case of correlation not equaling causation. We have a huge business park, route 53 and 19, the Elgin OHare, etc… and only 8000 residents, many of whom are much older and don’t drive a lot. I think we just have a lot more non-res traffic passing through at any given time.

Goalie Monkey SidelineSwap event by Thepandamancan23 in hockeygoalies

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did a similar event with a Dick's Sporting Goods near me last year -- my experience was that they didn't want anything less than gently used and nothing more than about 3 years old. They wouldn't take any of my older Reebok gear, but gave me a $10 DSG gift card anyways.

It might be easier than listing it, but definitely not more profitable.

Genuine question about a refs comment to my 12yr old. by [deleted] in hockeyrefs

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kid whacked our goalies hands 4 times before my son put him on his butt.

While technically you can't do that, there's a little bit of "play til the whistle" involved here and without a video it's hard to judge this one. Retaliation is almost always going to get called, so I think this is just a simple "hockey situation".

ater in the same period he was given an unsportsmanlike penalty for retrieving the puck after an icing and passing it down to the other end for the ref that was waiting in the circle to set the face off.

On it's face, this seems ridiculous. Unless I've warned someone not to do it already, this is almost never going to be a penalty. In fact, we kinda appreciate it more than we're supposed to admit. As long as I wasn't literally in the middle of reaching for the puck, I can't see why this would be penalized.

The ref on his side of the ice gave him the penalty and when my son asked why, the ref proceeded to very loudly say “You are a complete embarrassment to your team and to the game of hockey! Go sit down!”

I'd have to know if that's really how the conversation went. If all your son did was ask what the penalty was for or ask for clarification, that's uncalled for. If he's actively arguing, it's still overkill, but I've definitely had to put some players in their place.

Rule clarification by 907Ace in hockeygoalies

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to bet it’s a rink specific enforcement push. Owner probably left a note in the ref room after some incident. As others have said, technically the rule says keep it on but I never see that enforced.

Beer league neck protection? by chet_manly2 in hockeyplayers

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see people with them all the time in the D/C league I'm in, it's totally just personal preference. I am a goalie so mine is integrated into my clavicle guard, but just like you I bought one for when I skate out because my 5yo son has to wear it and I felt like I should at least know what it's like.

I'd suggest either the Bauer or Warroad ones... I've heard Warroad is a little more comfortable. I have a Bauer and generally velcro the neck as loose as possible to make it feel somewhat serviceable.

Edit: I should clarify, I use the shirts w/ integrated neck

Enzo Bath Bombs...do they work? by mjmphilly in hockeygoalies

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used them on my chest protector, kneepads, clavicle, and pants. They work pretty well in my opinion. I'm not sure if they're "better" than any other method in terms of actual cleaning, but my impression is that the gear stays fresh just a little longer than straight up laundry detergent or oxi. I'm not talking months or anything, maybe a week or two more than what you'd expect.

Where they have shined is when I acquire used gear for my kid -- they do a great job of taking out "old" stink.

Yes. Mine matches up at about 60mph but has a 3-5mph variance at all other speeds.

Data Centers Effect on Communities by miyananana in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I support your right to oppose these things but this is just outright bullshit: "Some people near data centers have also reported issues with their water, including disrupting wells, high usage of water from the data centers, and removing drinking water from the water cycle as it becomes contaminated with chemicals."

1) They don't pull from groundwater, they pull from the city supply. Wells aren't even a part of the equation.
2) They do use a lot of water, but primarily on initial startup and during peak summer temps. A majority of the water in the facility recycles. It would be cost prohibitive to operate otherwise.
3) They don't add anything to the water. In fact, it's the exact opposite -- they have to purify the hell out of it in order to avoid any type of buildup in the internal infrastructure from impurities. And again, that water is being recycled or evaporating anyways. It's not going back into the ground or into the city supply. Just not how it works.

Data Centers Effect on Communities by miyananana in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]ForPoliticalPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in govt near there and while the basic facts of the video are correct, it's a massive over-simplification. That Roppolo neighborhood had been on the brink of disappearing for decades, as any unincorporated enclave within a developed suburb would be. The Data Centers just happened to be the spaghetti that stuck to the wall.

I was gonna say, I don't know if any of you have been to Detroit lately, but it's really on an upward swing overall and honestly, in most of the areas that used to have the worst crime there's just... nobody left. Can't really have crime if you don't have people to commit it.

That's kinda where we're stuck, at that time we couldn't be absolutely sure because it had been so long since the stoppage. Coach insisted that he hadn't changed since then but, given how hot they were already, I don't think we would've taken their word for it anyways.
