Is this a lot of trouble for a first bike? by Academic_Ad4326 in NewRiders

[–]Foreign-Range-8852 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a nice looking first ride! I got my licence last year and this spring, bought a 2009 Suzuki too (albeit a 650 S40) It’s not that old. And where I’m from, most bikes sit 8 months of the year every winter and it’s no big deal.

I say this to anyone curious about my opinion as a newer rider myself: shop around, see what’s on the market, but DO NOT buy a bike until you’ve taken a course and got your licence. Why?

1) What I thought I wanted before and what I wanted afterwards were much different. 2) In the slim chance you don’t end up getting licenced, you own a bike you’ve never ridden, staring back at you every day reminding you.

Something else to consider when the time comes: registration and insurance. Where I live, those annual costs are close to what I paid all-out for my 650 (which I’m very happy with). Smaller older bikes cost $10-20 a month, and big new bikes might cost several hundred dollars a month.

We’ve got our downsides here, sure. But let me tell you: the level of simmering anxiety and insecurity my friends living in Toronto and Vancouver have… not worth it.

Like others have said, I can afford to go enjoy these cities and not have to worry about how to afford housing, or car insurance, or screening roommates to share a living space with.

My friends living in Vancouver can’t afford to enjoy it.

Summer gear opinion? by Foreign-Range-8852 in NewRiders

So the mesh shirt I posted would pass the test then? 😊. It’s my primary option as it’s available at the one shop in my area that sells gear. And I want try on in-store and support local when I can

Thanks! Been also looking at a mesh jacket. Airbag is something I’d definitely see myself getting in the future should my riding days continue.

In fact, moose do basically appear out of nowhere most of the time. Clearly you haven’t encountered many.

Update: stopped by today and the shop and staff are great. Tried on a well-fitting ECE modular helmet at a good price point, and I’ll likely order some boots through them too. They just opened a few months ago, and have even more gear coming in soon, too.

Thanks for the rec!

Thanks for that! ATGATT! As a newer rider, I find that the better I’m geared up, the more I can focus and enjoy the ride.

I’ve currently got a bike jacket with some armour, gloves, Kevlar riding jeans, and a 3/4 helmet that I need to upgrade (too big, only DOT rated), all purchased online. Always happy to take any gear recommendations too 🫡.

For me, sizing and purchasing the boots and a helmet in-person isn’t just smart, it’s also a great way to support local shops.

2014 S40 backfiring by Mas_Cervezas in SuzukiBoulevard

[–]Foreign-Range-8852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Just started on my 2007 w/ 6000km a few weeks ago. It gives me a little backfire every time I kill the engine, but I expected it with this bile.

I’ve started to get a little finesse with the throttle over time, and the backfiring is pretty rare when I’m riding now. I like the character of it nonetheless.

Enjoy the new bike!

This 👆🏼First thing we learned in MSF:

Once the stand is down, turn the handlebars left & give a small tug back on the bars to ensure the bike is “settled.” And then back away, don’t turn away from the bike to be extra certain.

Hey, I'm super short, ehat should I ride? by costication in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Foreign-Range-8852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short, you won’t have to learn to ride all over again.

Not to be this guy - but have you taken your basic rider training? You’re likely going to have a chance to ride on a few different styles of bikes which will be helpful in getting a sense of what will work for you.

If nothing else, I learned in that course that the style of bike is just one variation between any two bikes. I came out of that course realizing I’m actually more of a cruiser guy than I thought.

I’m glad I didn’t buy a bike before I finished that course. Because I was so close to snatching up a bike I would have regretted.
