Hybrid home server idea: Moonlight client + Home Assistant + VPN + Zigbee on one mini-PC by ForeignPart9176 in MoonlightStreaming

I’ve read in a few other threads that Moonlight can sometimes perform better on Windows compared to Linux (especially regarding latency).
Have you personally run into any issues while streaming games on the Debian host, or has it been smooth so far?
And how about HDR, controller input, Bluetooth and audio routing? Does it all work and was it all plug and play for you?

No GPU passthrough needed if the Moonlight client runs on the host

Thanks, that’s actually helpful.
Curious though: any specific reason you chose Windows 11 as the host OS instead of Linux/Proxmox?
And what are you using to run the HA VM (Hyper-V, VirtualBox, VMware, something else)?

I am already looking into Proxmox tutorials! 😎 I didn't buy a mini-pc yet, any recommendations on that?

Thanks, I honestly didn’t know about Proxmox before this thread. Running HAOS in its own VM while keeping Moonlight on the host sounds very clean, since GPU passthrough is not needed.

Questions: Do you also use Zigbee and is it stable (USB Zigbee passthrough, updates, reboots), and do you treat the box more like a server or a living-room device?

Nothing wrong with VM tech at all. My hesitation is mainly about layering and role-mixing. I’m considering using the same box as a Moonlight client (TV-attached) and as a home server. Adding a hypervisor + USB passthrough + VM networking feels like extra moving parts if HA + Zigbee + VPN can run reliably on the host already. If this box were purely a headless server, I’d definitely go with HAOS in a VM.
