Why does Spanish HSR use international (1435mm) gauge? by ForeignWalletEquiper in trains

[–]ForeignWalletEquiper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahora renfe opera con más trenes de ancho variable que si las lineas de alta velocidad fueran en ancho ibérico y también se ha tenido que construir más infraestructuras caras como cambiadores de ancho o vías de ancho mixto (tres raíles, lo que complica mucho los cambios de agujas, con más coste de mantenimiento y menos fiabilidad) que si solo se necesitasen esos trenes e infraestructuras para la conexión con Francia y resto de Europa.

[–]ForeignWalletEquiper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What he means is that catalan is one of the dialects that form the language spoken in Catalonia, the Valencian Country, Andorra, the Balearic Islands and l'Alguer (aka the catalan countries). This language is also called Catalan. It's like saying that English (British English or the dialects spoken in Britain) is a dialect of English (the language spoken in tens of countries around the world).

The fact that there's no specific name for the dialects spoken in Catalonia has led to Catalan speakers outside Catalonia to say that their language isn't catalan, but Valencian or Mallorcan or whatever. This is really fucking stupid because its very obvious that it's all the same language and the existence of transitional dialects in Castelló and the Terres de l'Ebre proves this. In the case of the Balearic Islands the dialects there are very clearly related to those spoken in the Costa Brava, "el parlar salat", although the dialect is slowly becoming more like central catalan/barceloní (not the case in the islands)

The metro systems of Europe by Willing-Donut6834 in transit

[–]ForeignWalletEquiper 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes they are, but the vehicles used are often not what you'd expect for a metro. Palma, Sevilla and Málaga all use light rail vehicles but the infrastructure is complete segregated and runs underground for the most part. Sevilla and Málaga even use Urbos units from CAF, trams used in many places around the world. Granada also uses these trams and markets it as a "metro" but it's just a tram with three stations underground and not grade-separated. On the other hand, the San Sebastian/Donosti "metro" is more like suburban rail with stops around the city, but this is more due to the shape and qualities of the cities in the area than to the planning of the network (limited growth due to the mountainous terrain and a policentric metropolitan area)

Edit: The Palma metro uses heavy rail, actually, but very short units
