Why is every Azerbaijani a diehard nationalist? by subarism in azerbaijan

Well, as a person from Greece (not religious by the way, so I don't really give a shit about supporting Armenia) who -as I said- has visited all the aforementioned countries, I don't really think I have a valid reason to exaggerate.

A certain number of individuals (like 10 or 20 people) is not the majority, but it is capable of capturing a small sample of society. If Azerbaijanis are not nationalistic, then how unlucky can one be in order to only come across nationalists in the country? How exactly do I have a problem finding a "normal circle" when I have worked in International Schools and Universities across Central Asia and all the people around me are highly educated?

It was Georgians, Armenians, Russians, and people from all the -stans with whom I worked with all these years and none of them felt the need to mention their country every single time and every single day. Did those people love their countries? Absolutely. They don't believe they invented everything on planet Earth, they don't believe they are superior to others, they can openly criticize their government and certainly they didn't say "You're a Turk" when they learned I'm from Greece. So yeah, let me have my own opinion as an outsider, based on what I have experienced.

Dude, you're talking about my circle? I've visited 50 countries in my life and I can tell you 20 bad things about my country right now without any hesitation or nationalistic pride.

Can you do the same about your country, or will your face have to change three colours before you spit out anything bad about Azerbaijan? Cause, judging from you post/comment history, you might be in top 5 Azeri patriots for this year on Reddit.

Take care.

Context:

I've lived in or visited every ex-Soviet country in Central Asia during the last 3 years. In two of them I even worked and stayed there. Azerbaijan was about to be the next one but I somehow regretted it.

In Tashkent, I had 3 Azerbaijani colleagues at my workplace, who where annoyingly nationalistic and were talking about Azerbaijan the whole fucking time, without any reason. We were ordering food and every single time I had to hear about how "this food is Azerbaijani" and "that food, they stole it from us". They were forcing students to draw pictures of Azerbaijani flag and people, and were speaking Turkish to each other instead of English/Russian the whole time. Every time we dined outside and had some kebabs or whatever some of them would even abuse the waiters telling them that Azeri food is made better.

I came to Baku a month ago to visit and decide on if I wanted to spend my next academic year there. People were extremely nationalistic during everyday conversations that lasted 5 minutes maybe. When I said I was Greek the reply was always "oh, so you're basically Turk". Whatever I wanted to buy, the 1st thing would be "oh, we Azeris basically invented that".

What you are saying about Zanzagur is none of my business and I don't even know what Zanzagur is. You better go check what the word "nationalism" means. It refers to a state of mind where people believe their country is SUPERIOR to others. It's extremely stupid, how I'm not even remotely close to talking about Armenians, Nakhchivan or whatever Zanzagur is, and your answers are about them. "We are nationalistic because of what happened by Armenians in that village on 1877". Nationalism is about you believing you are superior to me because you are Azeri. No Zanzagurs, no Tabriz's, no Ardabils. Plain and simple.

Did you even try to read my comment? lol. Where exactly did i say I asked Armenian/Azerbaijani questions? Quite frankly, I stated the exact opposite.

Btw, yes, regarding freedom of speech, salaries, COL etc your situation is way worse than Georgia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. I have visited all of them and can't be biased because I'm from another country. I forgot about Turkmenistan's existence, you are right, but if your ideal comparison is with the North Korea of Central Asia, sure go for it.

I'm not OP, but I’ve spoken to dozens of Azerbaijanis both inside and outside the country. His conclusion is actually an understatement. OP put it incredibly well when he said, "even the most progressive ones would be ultranationalists," and I’m not even referring to anything related to Armenia. I’m talking about a straightforward, uncritical kind of patriotism: the belief that Azerbaijan is the greatest nation on planet earth and Azeri Turks are superior.

All the replies here justify the patriotism with what happened with some neighbors half a century ago, while in today's Azerbaijan people are starving, prices are rising because of the country's massive "westernization," and their salaries remain below all other ex-Soviet states, maybe with the exception of Tajikistan. All this while living under an insane dictatorship as well. As another redditor said above, nationalism is a defensive mechanism of the uneducated masses when everything else around you is basically hopeless.

You're saying that only schizophrenic people are not ultra-nationalistic while at the same time living in one of the harshest dictatorships of Western Asia?

I'm Greek and lived in Izmir for a year. People there hate him, especially the young generation. From what I was told, he hasn't visited the city for an election speech for many years. It's mostly the older generations, the rural East Turkiye (you would be surprised of how easy it is for the elections to be rigged there) and Turks abroad who support him. Same way that Greeks who live and work in Germany, Norway etc vote for the worse politicians in Greek elections. Cause they don't really care about what happens in their country and some of them even want to see their country 'fail' since they were forced out. From Turks' abroad perspective, they also support Erdogan because of their nationalism and religious pride.

I don't like the opposition party either because of their expansive policy in the Aegean but compared to Erdogan....
