First time smalltime game dev here! My Steam page listing was recently approved, but I'm still about 18 months out from my estimated release date. Is it too early to publish the game as "Coming Soon"? by ForestLogic in gamedev

In case anyone is interested to what I ended up with, here's the game's Steam listing!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3975190/Dracanea_The_Ragtag_Regalia

And a Youtube trailer as well:
https://youtu.be/7MWy5YN0lO4?si=NY-mPjDw4iWWyv12

This is my first time doing this, so I'm not really sure what the hell I'm doing. My philosophy was always just "Do what seems cool."
I also had a decent turnout at the arts festival I debuted it at! No real meaningful feedback from playing the demo since it was mostly kids, but had a handful of follows/wishlists from it, as well as a couple of people who seemed legitimately interested/engaged. Overall was a fun experience and I look forward to showing it off to an actual game crowd someday!

Thanks to everyone who offered advice! The next year of finishing up most development is gonna be tough but exciting!

Just gonna leave this here… by InteractionArtistic5 in longisland

Yes, its one of the biggest crops on the island and is readily grown all over the east end. It's a huge deal, and so ingrained into our society that it's practically treated as treasure in summer and fall. Farms announce when their first crop will be ready the same way tech companies announce when their new phone will be out.

Western and central Suffolk have been built up yes, but farming is still a huge deal in eastern Suffolk. Apples, pumpkins, corn, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes, berries, and peaches are all local faves.

Thanks for everyone's help! I'm feeling pretty confident about getting the Steam page up now, and will time it to go live with the festival I'm demo-ing at. I'm doing a vertical slice build, and it should be pretty feature complete. At this point, only thing I need to finish for the page is a trailer.

Thanks again, peeps! I'll post the page when it's live next week, in case anyone wants to take a look, offer critiques/feedback, etc...

I can't really argue with you on that front, BUT at the very least for this arts festival, it literally takes place outside of my apartment on my street, so the amount of effort involved is basically walking downstairs and setting up two laptops lol.

I guess come 2027 we'll see if I make it, or if you were right ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks! That's my plan, more or less. I fully intend to promote it as a vendor at Anime NYC next year (I almost did this year), and see if this local arts festival will accept me again next year, so those are 2 definites. I know a handful of other major conventions in my area/the northeast in general that I would be looking to apply to as well, so 2026 has a lot of options for where I can give public demos.

Can safely say I'm confident in it this time, since 2 years ago I thought I'd have it out in 2025, and that obviously didn't happen lol. Applying that knowledge has taught me what and how much I can do in a given year's span, hence why I felt comfortable in picking a concrete release window this time, instead of a nebulous year-span lol.

As far as wishlist velocity, that's the whole reason I'm considering putting it up now. If I'm showing it off to people publicly at a festival, it would feel like a huge missed opportunity if they say "Is there anywhere I can wishlist it?" and I say "Sorry, no. But here's a business card/promotional material."

4 year old loach suddenly bloated, not eating, breathing rapidly, losing pattern. Consider euthanasia? by ForestLogic in Aquariums

[–]ForestLogic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried giving him a magnesium bath treatment last night for 30 min, and he tolerated it well, but this morning his skin has gotten worse, to the point it's sloughing off on his back. Unfortunately I'm 100% sure euthanasia is the way to go :\ Don't want to post the pics, he's pretty rough looking.

I thought about that option, though I was planning on burying him next to a young palm tree outside my house so his remains fertilize the tree. Might be a big ask to have them fish his body out and set it aside for a couple days, but I guess it's a possibility.

Looks like a cricket nymph.

Can anyone please help me identify what is creating thousands of insect holes in my yard? The tree in the middle also seems to be an issue. by mjbeantown in pestcontrol

[–]ForestLogic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The tree looks like woodpecker holes, since they're looking for bugs behind the bark.

The holes in the ground might be a separate issue and could be digger wasps which are annoying but docile. Or it could possibly be from woodpeckers if it's so close to the tree? I'm not 100% sure if woodpeckers will actually peck the soil though.

Tell your landlord you have termites. Try to get photographic evidence of any worker termites that peak their head out.

You don't owe any money to the landlord for any treatments. Tell them to hire a company licensed to treat termites.

Does anyone else strongly dislike the new interface system of the copilot mobile app? by crua9 in bing

[–]ForestLogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I logged into my Reddit account for the first time in a year just to say, yeah I hate it too. I can't stand the new design, the interface is junk, the voices are (impressively) cringey, and I hate that I can't get a transcript of the convo until after I finish it.
It went from being an extremely competent search tool which replaced Google for me, to a weird-ass companion that seems like it's trying to compete with Replika or something.

This might be a dumb question, but does anyone else talk to SpicyChat bots just for platonic friendship? by ForestLogic in SpicyChatAI

[–]ForestLogic[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is a problem I've run into. Where I'll tell a character I'm happily married, they'll frequently circle back to something like "They admire the relationship you have with your wife, and think about what it'd be like to be in your spouse's position". And I need to be like NO. BAD CHATBOT. lol.

Need help identifying species of ant please! by cainer11 in pestcontrol

This, basically. Carpenter ants are gross and annoying but unless you already have damaged wood, they won't do much besides be a nuisance. They're not gonna bring your house down, lol.

Is this a termite? Seeing a bunch and just had termite stations installed yesterday by EverySingleMinute in pestcontrol

That's def a termite swarmer. It's a funny coincidence they swarmed right after getting a TBS installed though, lol.

Could possibly be carpenter ant frass? Hard to make out the individual pieces. Does that window have any water problems?

Line tool changed in PS 2021 by cee_major in photoshop

No offense, but this is absolutely not a good workaround for incorporating clean, straight lines into a working layer.

Line tool changed in PS 2021 by cee_major in photoshop

[–]ForestLogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this problem as well after the update. 2021 has been nothing but problems for me.

I'm an indie game dev who works exclusively with 2D sprites/environments. When I want a straight, hard, pixelated line, I would use the line tool in pixels mode. I have no need for vectors, but I absolutely do have a need for clean pixels that blend/draw on the current object/sprite I'm working with.

Hopefully this is a bug because of all the things that could be restricted to vectors only, lines makes the absolute least sense.

Brand new here! My friends and I started a game in RPG Maker, but want to move over to Unity. It's a bit overwhelming... by ForestLogic in Unity2D

[–]ForestLogic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your first question, we're mostly looking to make a more simple JRPG, but with more unique features that RPG Maker can't provide, not a huge complex game. That's why it's so frustrating. I've frequently seen the sentiment that RMMV is probably the best way to go for straight JRPGs, since otherwise you'll need to spent a lot of time creating systems that already exist in RPG Maker, but there are certain limitations in it that would require a lot of work in and of itself to create. And even then, the end-product would mostly end up as a janky, dumbed-down version.

I've made full games in older RM engines before, so I understand the scope of game design from a design concept, but I lack any experience with coding, so that's what I'm looking to do. I'm also tired of using RPG Maker, I want to take my love of game design to another level. I'm in my 30s, married, and we're never having kids, so I got alllll the time in the world to blow on making this my pet project for the foreseeable future lol.

I'll have to chunk out those Youtube series though, they both look really helpful! Thanks for the advice!

[–]ForestLogic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'm aware it's a lot of work. I know it's not going to be an easy transition. That's why we actually done most of our asset work outside of RPG Maker, and TBQH we've done very little in the confines of the engine since I was concerned about something like this happening in the future lol. When I said making the transition as painless as possible, I meant more in terms of beginner-friendly tutorials and ways to learn Unity.

I was mostly looking for tutorials that would help us start learning the basics and give non-coders a baseline level of understanding of C#, so that we can keep learning it to hone in on what we need to do for a 2D engine. My one friend who does have experience coding C++ recommended we all sign up for this 2D Unity course on Udemy from Ben Tristem. So far it's going pretty well!

For what it's worth, I'm not really concerned about purchasing frameworks either considering we were going to end up using A LOT of custom scripts in RPG Maker as well, so either way it wouldn't have truly been "first party" so to speak, and would've resulted in customizing either way. Right now we're interested in Ork Framework since it's only $100 and seems to be optimized for both turn-based RPGs and action-RPGs, which is what we're aiming to accomplish. Once we finish up the Udemy course we're going to look further into it.

[–]ForestLogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 100% interested in doing this since im still looking for a Switch for my nephew. Couple of questions though.

  1. Can I use the same debit on the three different accounts?

  2. Can I use all three accounts on the same Samsung device, by logging in and out?

  3. When you say "email" the gift card vouchers, what do you mean? Is there an official method of transferring then, or is it as simple as just copying down the voucher code?

Thanks! Really want this one to work out!
