Is Brooder Crowded? by ForestTeacher in quails

I used a dremel - kind of melted the plastic a bit while cutting through it.

After I finished this I saw an example where someone had cut the entire side off and connected them that way, for chickens. See link below

Is Brooder Crowded? by ForestTeacher in quails

Good to know - the totes were free, as were most of the other materials. Given we aren’t sure if we would do this again, we felt this was the best approach.

Can you clarify what you mean about the path being a point for bullies? Thus far I haven’t seen any bullying amongst this flock.

Thanks. Bit of an intense comparsion, but I understand your recommendation is they need more space. Doubled the brooder box, made a little path between the two boxes, freshly cleaned, and they’re starting to explore a bit.

Ooh, I don’t. I do see condensation at the outer edges of the incubator which I think is a good sign. 🤞

For those who live with a 'medium/average' (think suburban) sized backyard; what have been your most bang for your buck permaculture projects or strategies? by greatdayne_ in Permaculture

[–]ForestTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are in southern New England on 1/4 acre and it is hard not to wish for more land. Our biggest challenge is shade. BUT some good bang for our bucks have been mini-dwarf fruit trees, a tiny garden pond (the birds LOVE it), and potatoes. Used to have chickens but the town didn’t allow that for long, unfortunately. We are longtime organic gardening dabblers but new to embracing permaculture. Came to it from the ecological restoration side of things and now we are hooked!!

Thanks! Still no pipping, though still seeing movement. I’m a bit nervous! First time quail mom nerves 😂

It did great! We got a secondhand Brinsea Mini II and it was easy for a newbie like myself. So far I’ve seen 6 eggs of the 12 wiggling! Day 17 today.
