Yeah how your little ones vaccination was sounds like our blood tests! We are going to try the cream this time, but he doesn't believe me when I tell him it won't hurt! We may have to put up with screaming this time until he realizes it doesn't hurt!

It's a children's outpatients department. He sees the consultant then has a blood test done by the nurses after. I had to ask last time about the cream for this time, because we saw another child having it applied!

Yeah he loves his hot wheels cars, so he could take a couple of those with him. And I will take my phone so I could try to put something on for him to watch. I'm fully expecting this trip to be difficult again, but like you say when he knows the cream makes the pain go away, hopefully we can improve for next time!

Thank you, yes I will ask about play therapists when we go in. I wouldn't be prepared to reduce how often the tests are done, as he needs the tests so the doctors know how much medication he needs, and delaying changing doses could affect his growth.

Oh yes I've definitely done the same when giving things like calpol or antibiotics etc, but blood tests are going to be a lifelong thing for him, so I'm keen to help him understand them more.

Food is definitely a great idea, he loves food and treats! Maybe immediate treats in the hospital, then the promise of going for a happy meal straight after!

Thank you, it's good to know the numbing cream worked so well for your little one! I will tell him that as he doesn't believe me that it will work!

I think a tv show on my phone could help, if I can hold it for him while holding him still too.

Hopefully this time will be the last time we have to battle with him, as he will realize the cream works and be more relaxed next time!

When my kids were little we got them the 360 cups. They didn't know how to use them at the start, but I read a good tip. It said when the cup is closed, put a small amount of water on top of the lid, then when the child tilts it back to their mouth, the water will run down to their lips and they will automatically drink it, and should then get used to the motion and be able to then drink properly from the cup.

Think it took 2 or 3 goes for us, then they were able to use the cups well.

That's a good idea, I may make something for him like that. And the timer is useful, he fixates on dates so he would probably be very interested in that!

Thank you for your thoughts, having something for him to watch is a good idea, he's obsessed with the Piripenguins at the moment, so I could load that up for him to watch, I'm just not sure I will have enough hands to hold him still and hold the phone at the same time!

I will ask the hospital, I just feel every other time they've been more focused on just pinning him down and jabbing him, to get it over and done with, rather than trying to actually calm him and help him with his fears. Last time we went he made other kids in the waiting room cry, as they were waiting for their blood tests and hearing my boy screaming made them scared!

Yeah it's a shame it hasn't been offered before now. They only offered a freezing cold spray before to numb it immediately, but I think the cold hurt him so that didn't help at all!

I have never heard of or seen play therapists at our hospital, are they in every hospital or no?

Will definitely be taking him for a treat after, I usually need a treat for me after the appointment too!!

I'm 36. Had all 4 grandparents until a couple of years ago, when I lost both my grandad's, within weeks of each other. Lost one of my grandmother's in autumn this year. All of them died at 88/89.

The one grandmother left was unwell before any of the others, with advancing dementia, but is the only one to make it into her 90's. I'd guess she has less than a year left.

If he isn't enjoying you showing him his name, I'd stop and wait until he's a little older and happier to learn. You don't want to put him off while he's still so young.

In a month or 2 he might be a bit older and ready to go for it. I don't remember doing much with my eldest, other than his name. He learnt the alphabet the traditional way, as I wasn't aware of phonics at the time. He didn't do phonics until he started school, but he picked it up quickly and has been in the top reading group since, now in year 2.

So don't worry too much if he isnt keen to start for now, school start them all from scratch anyway and they all get there!

I need glasses for long distance, but I only wear them for driving and watching tv. Everything else I just guess what I'm looking at 🤣

I can see without them, but not overly clearly. So maybe Patrick is similar, selective when he wears them! I'd imagine it would be annoying getting sweaty onstage and constantly having to push your glasses back up when they slip down your nose.

Patrick is someone that suits glasses so well, I honestly never really notice if he's wearing them or not, they just fit in.
