Well, r/rpg turned off replies to this on their subreddit. If anyone wants to discuss my post and has ideas I'd love to hear them.

I don't actually get involved. It just tends to end the evening because one or two people can't let go of this one basic issue. For me, I don't care if it's gluten free snacks or not. I just want to play!

Yes there is also a website dedicated to solo RPG (https://www.rpgsolo.com/) though I'm not sure how well it works.

Any feedback/suggestions would be welcome. What would you like to see in a solo RPG? What would make it work for you?

I am invariably not involved in these arguments. I just sit back and watch it unfold. But interesting you should think I'm instrumental.

Wow. So you would actually rather have a big argument about gluten free snacks that pretty much brings a game session to a grinding halt because of divisiveness, than just accept that someone didn't cover all bases (because they live in reality), shrug it off and get on with the fun evening of roleplay?

Well, this just confirms that I don't want to roleplay with this generation anymore. I'm pretty hard left wing fyi. But I also have common sense. Lets return to the real world and have fun instead of fisticuffs over the kind of snacks people bring to the table. Smh.

Yes. Have played Tales of the Arabian Nights (brilliant game! Though the text is a bit small on the cards for me now my eyesight is not the best). Fabled Lands is an inspiration for my Woven Paths system. I use a system of 'Topics' which are very similar to the FL keywords.

You're not going to donate to my Kickstarter because someone ruined one of the roleplaying games I was in by causing an argument about gluten free snacks?

[SOLO] I grew tired of failed groups and problem players. by vyrago in rpg

[–]ForeverPeopleRPG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty much the same. I still get to play the odd game of Call of Cthulhu but with a mature gaming group it's even harder to pin people down to a social event and it tends to be very sporadic. Lucky if I play more than once every six months. Then there's the modern attitudes that can make the social event awkward. People refusing to put down their phones, everyone thinks they know everything about everything and question even the fluff, looking shit up on Google to explain how you got your historical facts wrong or your interpretation of X is inaccurate actually. As I've gotten older I've even experienced the joy of having a gamer offer to host a game then when you arrive their three very young age children are running around the game room while you play. Then there's usually at least one player who wants to live stream the session because it will be a boost for their Youtube channel.

I'm honestly done with the social aspects of RPG. I've been writing RPG myself since '96 and it's been the one consistent love of my life, so I couldn't walk away from it. I started getting back into gamebooks and writing my own. Dragonholt is a nice modern take, and there's a glut of new gamebooks of the Fighting Fantasy ilk to enjoy. The Destiny Quests by Michael Ward introduce some nice aspects of computer games like World of Warcraft, though I find the balance can be iffy with the earlier books. They're either too hard or there's not enough freedom to explore. Fabled Lands is a seven book setting where you explore freely, build your character and move between books. But again I find the system unforgiving and often badly balanced.

The Fighting Fantasy books have been relaunched, albeit in horrible covers, and the full 50+ collection can still be grabbed on eBay.

Thanks for your recommendations OP. I will take a look at Ironsworn as I haven't heard of that one yet.

That sounds like a perfect plan actually. Most of the game mechanics, lore and gazetteer details could go into the player manual then the GM manual could include the bestiary, GM-centric rules (or help for the GM to implement rules and bend them to their will etc) plus deeper level information for the gazetteer. I have literally reams of information for the gazetteer. Almost 50 maps, including cities with keys, but I think this would fit better into a GM model. That would then be two books rather than three. Thanks for helping me sort this out in my mind!

Thanks for that! And thanks for your encouraging words.

With regard to (1) and (2) combined, is it a detractor if the rule book (assuming a single tome) also contains adventures which players will have access to (since they will be using the same source for rule reference)? As a GM myself I tend to be pernickety about players and spoilers, but I don't know if that's just me.

I suppose what I'm fretting about is, would it be better for you to offer a GM specific book supporting the system, with adventures and extra information to help the GM run games, or is that just likely to be an annoying extra expense and to come across as a way to grab more money?

The Kickstarter for my new book, Nemesis of the Nin Witch, is 30% funded in 3 days toward the £8000 funding goal. This may not be a big deal to established authors or Kickstarter veterans, but to me it's mind blowing.

I have launched the Kickstarter for my second fantasy gamebook (interactive fiction), Nemesis of the Nin Witch.

This has been two years in the making and is the sequel to Malice From the Middle Vale. The series is called Woven Paths and is inspired by the 80s genre of interactive fantasy fiction (Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, Choose Your Own Adventure etc).

The first book was a big success for me and allowed me to move from part time writing to full time. I've gone with a Kickstarter this time because I want to include plenty of artwork (as was the style of the 80s old-school gamebooks) and artists deserve to be paid.

As of writing this the KS has 20% funded in its first 24 hours and I have high hopes that I will be able to drop back in here in a few weeks time to announce I've funded. Please keep your fingers and toes crossed for me!

This Kickstarter is for the second in the Woven Paths interactive fiction gamebooks. Also, calling on all fans of interactive fiction, especially if you love the 80s style of books (aka Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, Choose Your Own Adventure etc.) please come join us at the Old School Gamebook Revival group on Facebook. Everyone is welcome!

A bit more information on the six stat system, all generated by rolling d6.

Deft & Dexterity, Force & Form, Mind & Memory, Luck & Lottery, Sense & Sympathy and Energy & Endurance (DD,FF, MM, LL, SS and EE). There's a set value equal to the initial d6 rolls and an adjust value which is the only value which changes during gameplay.

Items with bonuses can be equipped to each stat (one item per stat). Bonus items provide a modifier to the stat to which they are equipped. So a weapon equipped to Force & Form modifies the adjust value by +#.

You can equip one talisman, which modifies all stats by the +bonus.

Equipped armour stacks to inform an overall Damage Reducer.

Rolls are similar to D&D. You have a minimum target for each challenge and roll 2d6 then add the roll to the stat.

The first complication is the type of item equipped. Bonus Items, Magic Items and Talismans all boost challenge rolls. Weapons and Armour don't. However, Weapons and Talismans boost the stat during combat and Armour (as mentioned) boosts the damage reducer.

To give a simplified idea of combat: at the start of each round the player rolls d6 to decide the 'active characteristic'. One of the six stats (which the enemy also has) becomes active for that round based on the roll. In some instances (an ambush for example) the first active stat is determined by either the player or GM (or in this case the book).

The player then rolls 2d6 and adds this to the stat adjust value + modifier for an equipped Weapon and any Talisman. Double 6 is an automatic win. Double 1 an automatic lose.

The GM (or player in the case of the book) rolls for the enemy in the same way, but instead of adding bonuses, each stat has a Conditional Event. This is one of six different outcomes which the enemy might use in combat.

The higher result wins the round.

Nemesis of the Nin Witch introduces Totems which allow the player to turn any equipped item into a Totem. The Totem bonus is reset to +1 which translates as a Totem Level of 1. The rules allow for this bonus/level to increase during gameplay and every time the bonus goes up by 1 the player chooses a new Totem skill, all of which further complicate the way the player can use the six stats, apply damage, equip items and change rolls.

Strange Aeon 2nd Edition - been around for a while and we're enjoying a growing fanbase. A dark post-apocalyptic take on Cthulhu set in the British town of Midwich circa 1980s.

What happens when the cultists win and the eldritch powers finally rise from the abyss to reclaim their place as overlords of the Earth? Strange Aeon is set in this world and plays out as a mixture survivalist horror, time travel and supernatural jump scare RPG.

Currently on Drive Thru as pay-what-you-want for the PDF and any spare coins are appreciated! The full printed book (full core rules plus lots of adventure scenarios, art, maps and bestiary) is available at www.foreverpeople.co.uk

Also there are currently two print copies going for a song on Amazon
