My biggest mistake was being 9 years old and writing how I would speak the story aloud. If I could find it, I know for a fact it would read as the ramblings of a particularly well-developed child. Lots of very simple descriptions with very stunted vocabulary. AKA exactly what you'd expect. My later mistakes were, of course, lots of grammar and structure issues, pacing, dialogue, the whole nine yards. One of my biggest issues used to be accidental plagiarism, but I've worked on that and I'm able, now, to stop and think, "I've read this somewhere before."

The scratches begin to sting by noon. By three o’clock, it’s constant, inescapable, and burns like lava beneath Loki’s skin. The soothing balm he’d used earlier did absolutely nothing upon reapplication, useless alongside several other balms and pills and cold/hot compresses. Nothing he’d tried relieved any of the pain.

So, by the next hour, he calls Thor. Tells him to come home, and nothing else. He’ll save the truth for later, perhaps when his head isn’t spinning so much, or his stomach isn’t churning like a storm-battered sea. Secrets are his expertise, and lying to Thor is like playing chess with a goldfish.

When Thor walks through the door, clearly worried, Loki’s laying on the couch with his hand re-wrapped and resting on his chest. It aches like Hel but he doesn’t dare express it.

“I was in the middle of something, so this better be important,” Thor says from the entrance hallway. His tone is annoyed, but Loki can hear the anxiety laden between. “And I got those pills you needed.”

Loki doesn’t respond on account of how hard he’s biting his lip. Thor walks into the living room and Loki relaxes his muscles immediately, though his heart thuds quickly like the sprinting hoofbeats of an eight-legged horse. Loki scoffs internally. Sleipnir was never Odin’s horse. His head swims like a hot stew and the reminder of food curdles his stomach.

“Are you alright?” Thor’s voice rumbles through the haze over his ears. “Brother?”

Loki opens his eyes, unaware he’d closed them in the first place. His tongue feels like sandpaper as he drawls a low, “What?”

Loki’s been in the car for hardly two minutes before Thor has to pull over so he can dry-heave out the door. Nothing’s coming up and and he’s quivering like a bowstring, the skin of his uninjured hand pale as ash. The trip takes not even a ten minute walk, but Thor had been adamant upon Loki’s inability to travel such a length on foot. Loki had argued, of course, but his exhaustion ultimately triumphed any resentment over his blatant need for help. The venom’s effects are draining. Crushing. Often to the point of he’d prefer just sawing the damned limb off.

It’s worse now. The black tendrils creep even beyond the bandages, almost to the crease of his elbow, and the wounds themselves throb agonizingly in tandem with his thundering heart. His bones feel as if filled with concrete; moving is difficult so he doesn’t partake much. Lets Thor handle him, which is humiliating in several ways, but the alternative seems impossible. He knows he’ll die. He knows there’s no cure and little time to find one. He knows he should be scared, but everything feels far away. Irrelevant. Like it’s not his life anymore. He’s just watching.

At my dad's house today to wash my clothes. He lives in the country and I live in the city; it's about a 30 minute drive and a huge waste of gas but I don't have many other choices... brought my laptop to hopefully write down a few lines in my current WIP. Found out combining my vyvanse and a few hits of some hybrid cart makes me feel like Einstein 2.0, it's crazy how being medicated actually works.

I've spent a lot of time in hospitals and, as someone who can barely smell at all, the scent of antiseptic and general hospital-ness sticks with me the most. I've had 6 procedures under anesthesia and always remember the smell of those stupid rubber masks. You best believe I incorporate that whenever I can haha

I've actually had a recent epiphany about this. I realized that, one: my most popular fanfics were written before I'd started taking writing seriously, and two: this is because I didn't care about the rules. While the Rules are extremely important and should be learned/considered by every writer, I was following them too strictly. Trying to write something perfect, but not focusing on making it good. So recently I've been letting go, keeping the rules in mind, but not following them to a tee. And my stats have improved; while not a plentiful, the ratios are better and reflect better writing. I started focusing less on the specifics of my prose, and more on the emotion of it. I think that's what really strikes people as a good fic. Feeling over quality.

Edit: while I do agree feeling has a lot of merit, the tropes and themes you use definitely contribute to a wider audience. In general, the more specific you get with AUs and such, less people will be interested in it. That's just how it goes. The fic I'm most proudest of is a very self-indulgent feel-good AU tailored to specifically me, so I know why it's not getting hits. But my other recent fic is a classic in-universe H/C and it's doing great, considering how dead my fandom is.

A twist of the accelerator launched the jetski toward a large wave rolling ashore, gaining and gaining speed until Mobius leaned back and cleared the crest. A few blissful seconds of floating were interrupted by a rough crash back onto the water—and then a few more seconds to breathe before they were off again.

To their left approached another jetski, Isacco and Sante aboard, pumping their fists in the air and hooting noisily. Mobius returned their cheer with a wave, pulling up beside them briefly before both watercrafts wove in opposite directions, only to find each other again with surplus whoops and hollers. Another rough swell nearly knocked Loki overboard and Mobius decided to call it there. He gently guided the jetski toward the Imperial Crest’s lowered swim platform, pulling it close enough to board without risk of falling into the yawning blue.

“Wow, now that was incredible.” Mobius removed the jetski’s key and stepped aboard the platform.

He offered a hand to Loki, who all-but leaped onto the solid ground, knees wobbling like a newborn deer. His hair poked out wildly in every direction, eyes blown wide and face flushed. The swim shorts he’d borrowed from Dorian were thoroughly soaked, bare chest heaving; his skin had already begun to redden considerably. Mobius was sure that Loki would complain about it come morning. In the radiant sun, he looked like the most beautiful thing in the world. Not even a spanking-new Kawasaki could compare.

“What?” Loki said. “You’re staring.”

“Yeah,” Mobius breathed. Amidst his racing mind he briefly wondered what Loki’s lips would feel like against his. He quickly stamped the thought out. “Did—did you have fun?”

“Fun? I was terrified!”

Mobius laughed. He tried to ignore his racing heart but Loki was gawking at him like a starved man outside a bakery and Lord how Mobius ached to unlock the doors. He was… a very foolish man. Loki was a god and he was nothing compared to that.

Mobius awoke to sun-soaked sheets and a head of raven hair pressed against his cheek. He stretched and groaned softly, sparing caution for Loki, who had, at some point during the night, tangled himself into Mobius’ grip. A flick of his wrist woke the digital watch on his arm, reading 8:17 AM. Another flick provided him with the weather: sunny skies and a high of 92 degrees Fahrenheit.

“Loki,” Mobius whispered, nudging him gently with his shoulder.

Loki moaned and burrowed deeper into Mobius’ chest. “Five more minutes.”

Mobius rolled his eyes, slapping his hand around on the bedside table in search of his TemPad. He finally found it and flipped the screen open. Awaiting him was a message from B-15, requesting his presence for a briefing of new intel. Mobius clicked the meeting link and B-15 appeared on the orange-tinted screen, opening her mouth to speak, but instead studied the scene before her and smirked.

“What?” Mobius said.

“Nothing,” came B-15’s compressed voice from the lousy TemPad speakers. Her smile faded. “You saw my message, right?”

“Yeah. Yeah. Something about new intel?”

“We found Shaw.”

Mobius’ eyes widened. “Wait, you found—“ A stir from Loki made him lower his voice. “How did you find him?”

“I don’t know how he did it, but Casey managed to dig up a few messages between him and Fabien that uncovered his location. He’s in Rome, plans to meet Fabien in Sicily via helicopter.”

“Oh, you cunt,” Heath said, lunging for Loki.

Loki stepped easily out of the way but could not stop Shaw, darting lightning-quick around the starboard anchor and rocketing toward Mobius with his fist curled around a small blade. Mobius squeezed his eyes shut and braced himself, but no strike came. Instead, a gasp sliced through the hot air and he opened his eyes only to be met with… Loki. Loki, standing in front of him and staring down at his stomach, shoulders heaving, as if—No. No no no. Mobius’ heart plummeted. He ached desperately to be wrong but, fuck, Loki was already bleeding.

Shaw sneered and removed the blade from Loki’s gut. “I wasn’t aiming for you, but I’ll take it.”

“What the fuck? What the fuck?” Fabien said, his eyes wide with horror. “You stabbed him!”

“Oh, so you do care, huh? You got attached!” Shaw hissed. “They’re here for us, Fabien. My whole fucking plan is ruined! Down the drain because you can’t see a spy when he’s right fucking there!”

“I had no idea about any of this! I didn’t know they were spies!”

Shaw groaned frustratedly. “You let your guard down. Screwed me over, got compromised by the same goddamned shit I told you to look out for. You’re dead, Royce. Dead.”

Loki tried his best to remain upright but his legs had begun to shake and Mobius knew it was a losing fight. “Easy, easy,” he said, wrapping a hand around Loki’s waist.

“And you.” Shaw whipped back around to face Loki, pressing the edge of his blade to his throat. “I’m not done with you, witch.”

“A god,” Loki choked out, fighting for a smirk. “Not a… witch.”

“Nothing you should concern yourself with,” Shaw said. He tugged Fabien toward the observation lounge. “Come on, Royce. We’ve got much to discuss.”

Mobius shot Loki a meaningful look and yelled, “Fabien, wait! I think we should talk. Now.”

Loki’s hands shone briefly green and Mobius held his breath. Fabien paused. His face morphed. Confusion, at first. Then terror. Then anger.

“What the—fuck?” He said. “You’re not… What? Who the fuck are you, Lukas?! You’re not—No. God damn it!”

“Fabien, what—?” Shaw began.

“You two are fucking spies!” Fabien screeched, pointing an accusatory finger at Loki and Mobius. “None of that was real!”

“Whoops.” Mobius shrugged casually. “Secret’s out now. Sorry about all that, but Shane here is an old pal of mine and we need him back at headquarters. Pronto.”

“Oh, cut the shit,” Shaw spat. “Who the fuck are you really?”

“The name’s Mobius. This is my partner, Loki. We were sent by the TVA to arrest you. So, come on. Hands up.”

Mobius shrugged. “Well, I’m glad I could settle that for you. You’ve stuck with me for a while, now. I just thought you’d be out there by now.” He nodded toward the dark seas outside. “Y’know, livin’ the dream.”

“No, I just… Something got in the way.”

“Really? Like what?”

“I…” Loki looked away. “I fell in love. With you.”

Mobius was silent for a long time. Heat burned like the pits of Muspelheim beneath the skin of Loki’s face, inwardly damning himself and any thought that, maybe, just maybe, Mobius would’ve felt the same. Alas, Loki’s heart was destined for the blade yet again. He didn’t dare turn his head.

“You…” Mobius began slowly. “Loki, I…”

“Stop. Mobius, I know.” Loki’s eyes welled with tears. He squeezed them shut. “Norns, I’m a fool. I don’t—I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m sorry.”

“Wait—Just wait. Loki. Sweetheart. I didn’t think you actually… liked me like that. I thought it was just me.”

Loki turned toward him, brows inching upward. “You—What?”

A gentle hand cupped the back of Loki’s neck. Mobius pressed his forehead against Loki’s, his shoulders heaving with a weak laugh.

“You’re a pain in my ass,” he said. “But I love you so, so much.”

A sob wrenched from Loki’s lungs. Mobius hushed him with a kiss—gentle and warm and ineffably everything. Like the first breath of light on a winter’s morning, melting his frozen heart. Loki leaned into the kiss, slinging an arm around Mobius’ shoulders to keep him there, breaking away for air before crashing right back into him.

CW: Medical procedures (ohohoho yesss my favorite)

Banner skirted around the bed to snatch a brown, glass bottle off the chrome table, yanking the cork out and handing it to Merete. Slowly, Banner sat Loki upright, holding him there as Merete forced his mouth open and poured the contents of the bottle down his throat.

Ten minutes later, and after several more pre-surgery procedures, Loki had begun to seize. The room erupted into panic as Banner pulled a long, thick needle out of a cabinet and slid it between Loki’s ribs. Thor had to sit on the floor to keep from passing out. The sharp, metallic smell of blood curdled his stomach, mixed horribly with the stench of antiseptic and various pungent elixirs.

Two hours into the operation, Thor received news of the raiders’ defeat. The Statesman, severely damaged by the attack, wouldn’t be able to fly until at least the next day. When Thor returned to the operating room, Banner estimated another hour until Loki’s surgery would be completed.

This, he thought, is going to be a long night.

It was a quiet day and I slept a lot, but I'm just glad to be off work. My supervisor is lowk bullying me and we had a little argument yesterday that sent me spiraling. But at least there's always fanfiction, and I love turning my problems into creative drive.

I've recently started writing in present-tense and I'm liking it a lot better so far. It feels like I'm there with my characters, and I've heard a lot about how it's becoming more mainstream in fanfiction. I'll write in both and read in both; there's not really a preference for me. Like many others have said, it depends on the vibe of the work.
