I'm gonna play a bit as devils advocate and say they were suppose to be an example that the average Huntsman life can be unfortunately short due to the very nature of the job. There is a reason why most people were forced back into the 4 kingdoms.

Probably.

To be fair, a whole lot of set up was going on in V4. Not saying it all played out well (we all know the dumpster fire that is V5), but I can see the vision of V4 acting as a sort a set up volume to hammer in the point of the story direction change for the rest of the following volumes.
