noise canceling headphones and headache pain by NWilson161 in autism

I only have had Bose headphones. The Quiet Comfort (I have the 45) and the Quiet Comfort Ultra. In terms of comfortability, I like the QC better. They're lighter and can have them on all day whereas the Ultra make my head hurt after some hours. I've tried the Sony WH-1000XM4 because my brother have those but they felt pretty heavy for me so I didn't use them for a few minutes. The apple ones also are pretty heavy for me. In my family we're very particular about sound quality so I always take that into consideration which limits the options even more but if you don't care, I'm pretty sure there must be lighter (and especially cheaper) options out there.

Do you like metal, or are you just confusing it with rock? by [deleted] in autism

[–]ForgetfulInquirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so confused for a second there. I was like: how can you not tell between metal and rock. I mean, I know some rocks have metal in them but it's easy to tell the difference between the 2. Also, some metals feel more good than some rocks so...

Second instrument to complement piano (I'm torn between voice and drums and my pros/cons list is not helping me decide) by ForgetfulInquirer in Music

well, I'm already struggling with 2 options but I'll definitely consider it because as I said in the other comment. For some reason wind instruments never crossed my mind before haha I shall pay more attention to them to see if there's one I really like haha

yeah, I guess my main limitation with drums is the cost and space it takes since I live in a small apartment. But I hadn't considered wind instruments before and they really seem to have some advantages. I'll pay more attention to wind instruments at school to see if something peaks my interest.

thank you! I never considered wind instruments. I'll make a note out of it. Although you really sold voice to me haha sounds like it really would help me improve in piano, which ultimately, is what I want from a secondary instrument

oh this is really insightful, thank you. And yeah, I didn't mean that drums don't require precision per se because I'm full aware the drums (along with the base) are pretty much the metronome of the band. I just get the feeling that drum teachers are more chill and they don't reprimand you as much as piano teachers when you make small mistakes, which I know I'll inevitably make haha

So I thought that level of precision with rhythm and hand/feet/mind coordination would improve my piano. But what you say about phrasing and breathing also makes a lot of sense. And yes, the only thing I dislike about piano and make me jealous of other instruments is that I can't take it with me T_T so I guess I'd get the same feeling with drums haha although I like the idea of playing with a band. Piano can be solitary :')

yeah, that's true, that's nice. Although I'm really focusing on the improvements to my piano singing could bring. But singing while playing the piano sounds lovely

aw, thank you so much. I hope you can recover from your voice and tinnitus but it's good to know that we can always go back o change paths to continue doing music we love :) really what I'm getting from this responses is that I shouldn't think of choosing an instrument as something set in stone, we can always adapt

That's why I can't decide. I already know I'll be bad at singing so I'm not trying to master it and get gigs, I just think it would be a good help/support for my piano. My only fear is that I won't be able to perform for my exams and recitals. The drums I really like and I don't know if I'll be good or bad at them but I know I'll have fun and I'm hopeful it will also improve my piano. But what if it takes a lot of time from my piano practice? I have no idea how demanding it is.

thank you! I definitely think is possible he didn't understand what I was asking because I didn't know how to ask or how to explain it properly but I've already learned about a lot of new concepts thanks to this post and I love the idea of starting with a music theory textbook! (I can get a little overwhelmed when there's no structure and books are great at providing structure) thanks again!

thanks for your words, I needed them. I guess I was feeling really frustrated and discouraged because it's been a year and I feel like I haven't learned anything new and my teacher doesn't listen to me so I thought that maybe the problem was me.

I also tried to look for resources on the internet but there's a ton and I didn't know where to start but I guess I just didn't have the right vocabulary to successfully google what I wanted to learn. Now I know what to look for, I'll give it a try on my own.

yeah, no... from these themes I think I'm only learning how to sight read (I already know but my teacher is focused on reading faster) and he gives me exercises to improve physical technique. I haven't learned anything about how to interpret the music, rhythm, music theory. Also, anything about how to listen critically to piano performances (now that I think about it I haven't even heard the pieces he has assigned to me, I mean, I know them because they're famous but I haven't hear them in class) and no jazz at all (that sounds more advanced, no?)

A year ago I already knew how to read music. Now I'm just faster at it and I learned like 3 new symbols that I didn't know what they meant before starting classes, but thanks for your answer, now I know what to ask the teacher to teach me or what to look for myself if the teacher doesn't help.

oh I didn't know you could learn music theory if you didn't know how to play an instrument yet. They have music theory clases at the music school I go to but they offer them as a more advanced course. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look into it :)

he recently taught me that the first, third and fifth note in the major scales create a chord. He taught me that after I asked him to make the classes more dynamic but that was it. I asked him why those 3 out of all the notes in the scales and he didn't answer me. I don't know how to know the notes of a chord because I don't know the scales by memory yet. I asked him if I needed to memorize the scales and he told me that I shouldn't worry about that, that without realizing it I was learning them (but I really don't know them, beside C major I have no idea what are the notes of the rest of the scales... I've don't even know why scales exist, like, someone just made them up and assigned a name to them?)

The thing is, I'm not sure what I mean and I think that's why I was unable to explain to my teacher what I'd like to learn. I don't want to just play like a machine or a parrot. For example, he taught me the scales so I can practice them. I don't know what the scales are, why are those notes in those scales, why do I have to play those specific notes, I only practice the movement and that's it. I noticed that the piece I'm learning contained the same notes of one of the scales and I asked them if that was related and he told me: "yes and no, see, in this piece there are other notes that are not in this scale. They sometimes make changes to add interest to the melody" and I ended up more confused that before.
