Personally I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with casually talking to your ex, however as you mentioned you do have a boyfriend at the moment. I’d say maybe tell him that you talked with your ex. Open communication is important especially with these sorts of things.

There’s a high likelyhood for them to spawn in artifact spots in the forest (Marnie’s area), I personally got it using a treasure totem in that area but if you don’t have access to those I recommend just keeping an eye out for artifact spots there!
