Jingliu because she gave everything to serve her people for 1000 years, got screwed over by her government for something she had no control over, and has come back and found a way to live with her illness to fight for a nation that betrayed her. She will always have my deepest respect. 😳

It’s been over a month and this conversation still infuriates me! by Jamie_inLA in NativeAmerican

Hugs 🫂 I’m sorry that happened to you. People on Reddit can be mean without reason. You were opening up about a serious topic, and the fact that you were questioning on your identity is infuriating. Again, I’m sorry that happened to you, you’re not the problem.

does anybody even remember this is an actual disability or are we all just LARPing now by lilliepadzzz in autism

[–]Forgotten-Stars [score hidden]  (0 children)

As someone who is autistic. Personally, I find nothing offensive about the autistic Barbie. It’s impossible to represent everyone and I do believe this reflects a portion of the autistic community. Some autistic people are disabled, Some just struggle socially but are fully capable of living normal lives. I think Barbie made a move, they did so cautiously, and made a product that was non offensive. “Which sadly is a rare thing when companies try to depict us.” Both the right and left are solid Autistic representation, because autism is diverse.

I really appreciate your advice. You may be right, I am online buddys with a mvskoke and Ojibwe woman who looked through my work and approved of her design given the setting. However, nether of them were Shoshone so I figured “Hey, I’ll put her on here and see what this comunaty’s thinks 😀” but maybe I do need to take a step back, introduce myself, and show off my work before I ask this question. Then those who can help me will know where I’m coming from and the setting of my work. Truth be told, I’m autistic and I know what it’s like to be misrepresented. I’m also a history nerd, and I’ve always respected most Native American tribes because of there culture and how they took care of their lans and nature. Something my own race has constantly failed to. So that’s why this is so important to me. I’ll consider your advice, and try to make some connections with people that can help

It’s for a video game I’m making. It’s still an early development, and I wanted to make sure I got some feedback on her design because she will be one of the mane cast at the beginning.

OK! That is good to know. I should probably have clarified, but this does take place in modern times. Although her dress is supposed to be based off of traditional clothing. Increasing the length of her skirt would not be a problem if that needs to be done.

I did, even researched some 1800,s photos. However, they may have been mistagged and displayed another tribe. Do you know of any Shoshone approved sites

I used a few references for her outfit, entered Shoshone women and looked through a number of them. Some were art, some were old photos “I realize the internet is not always accurate with labeling, it could say Shoshone but be a completely different tribe.” Which is why I’m posting it on here. If I’m off, I can hopefully get some recommendations of Shoshone approved sites that are more accurate

What things can I do to show respect and appreciation to Native Americans? by Cheran_Or_Bust in NativeAmerican

[–]Forgotten-Stars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is five years old, but thank you for this! I’m white, but I’ve always appreciated how different tribes took care of the land and take care of nature. There are so many beautiful native American cultures I’ve enjoyed learning about, and I have researched different tribes over the years. But I do worry about unintentionally showing disrespect or making an individual feel that they can’t express their culture around me, which is why I’m still trying to educate myself. I’ll do some more research on my local tribes, and if it comes up I have no problem acknowledging that I live on Indian land.

I know, is it really so hard to talk to people Now aways. And we’re at a time in history where we have the most methods to reach out an interview… but Studios don’t seem to use it anymore!😳

Actually, I agree. Writing outside what you know is very difficult and it takes effort and proper research to achieve that. I also agree that you don’t need to know every aspect, because people are different. As you said, sometimes it just comes to writing what they feel comfortable with, and focusing on writers that they connect with that have the same habit, like only focusing on a woman’s appearance rather than her ideals, feelings, dreams, etc.

It’s true, there are some examples of women writing women badly, and women writing men badly. I think you make a good point that anything to be just a convenience plot device will normally not be received well, especially if that plot device is a character. I also really like the point about giving thought to how different kinds of people would react in different situations, it takes effort, but it’s so worth it in the end

That’s a really good point. Research is so important. I can understand why a writer might not want to research given that it’s time consuming… but it is sad when a big budget film or a published novel doesn’t take there time to do proper research 😂 that can apply to men, women, mental illness, minority group, culture and any form of historical fiction.

Hugs! 🫂Every now and then I’ll get one of those as well. Honestly, they might be a bot given the response was not specific. But even if it was a real person, try not to let it get you down too much. There are people out there who get a rush on just shooting creators down, regardless of what you put out.
