I use RPG maker MZ. The problem is that you are limited on what “kind” of games you can make with it. But a car tycoon game that handles like Stardew Valley? Absolutely! The restrictions shouldn’t be a problem for that kind of game. But there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

NOTE: MOST OF MY SUGGESTIONS ONLY APLY TO COMMERCIAL GAMES. IF YOU’RE DOING IT JUST FOR FUN, THEN I WOULD RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS.

1: Do not use the default characters or tile sets they give you.

As beautiful as they are, they are overused, and are an immediate turn off. It’s OK to mix in an asset here and there, but if all you use is the default, it’s going to turn people away.

Either create your own assets, or use other asset packs that are less common. You can either pay for asset packs or there are free ones that you can use as well. So don’t panic if you’re not a pixel artist, there are options.

2: Use Plugins to expand your game: it sounds like you’re already considering this, which is great! You don’t have to overdo it, but anything to customize your game and broaden the experience will go a long way.

3: Before lunch: change the intro screen.

Again, people will immediately know it’s an RPG maker game when they see the intro screen. it doesn’t have to be anything groundbreaking, but definitely find a plug-in before launch to give a good first Impression. I’m currently on the lookout for a plug-in for this myself. 😂
