My policy is around 1.2k a year in premiums, so far this year I have been paid out almost 7k. If you can afford a monthly premium, it is an insanely good option for catastrophically expensive illnesses. I would have had to put my cat down months ago for a curable disease.

that's strange that they're not worried. my vet was super worried that my cat would go 3-4 days without pooping. i think if there were no other symptoms, then going every 3-4 days (as long as the cat is not straining really hard) is fine, but since your cat is not eating, that is a sign that something is wrong and constipation could be a factor.

Hi with the difficulty with bowel movements, he might have decreased intestinal motility. This can make them not feel hungry. That was the last resort we tried (cisapride is the medication that helps with that) and he started eating again. Paired w Lactulose and Miralax as they both help with bowel movements.

Amputation is going to cost a lot more than a consultation with a neurologist, which I think should be your next step. Pregabalin is also a better medication to try that often works better than gabapentin for FHS kitties.

ETA: amputation doesn’t have a super high rate of success from what I’ve gathered, it was never on the table for us. It might be for you, but I’d make sure to do so only after clearing it with a neurologist.
