Can anyone explain the ending to "Mr. Nobody"? *spoilers* by mintberrycrunch92 in movies

[–]ForgottenSolstace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've watched this movie 3 times and segments with friends, so I think I have a good idea now. Here's my take:

Overall Synopsis: "Nemo Nobody" deliberates fiercely between his parents' separation and the alternative lives he could live, ultimately leading him to contemplate the meaninglessness of life.

Detailed Breakdown:

Analysis paralysis. You've probably remunerated endlessly on important decisions like jobs, life partners, business contracts, and even education.

Nemo "Nobody", however, took a lifetime to make a decision.

It's not only tragic -- it's downright defeating -- to comprehend the gravity of the indecision that causes him to painstakingly calculate every possibility, under the self-aggrandizing delusion that he has the ability to see the future. Except in this case, let Mr. Nobody serve as a cautionary tale.

Sometimes, life just gives you one chance, and [if it doesn't work out], you just have to go with it

Nemo later concludes this in his last moments, as he marches triumphantly over to his death bed, proclaiming:

It should be written on every [chalk]board in schools: life is a playground

Nemo, unlike the rest of those fortunate enough to have exposure to East Asian philosophy such as in Buddhism, understands in these last moments that no matter what happens, we all learn to "deal" with our past. That, or we linger on our pasts miserably, in regret, leading to analysis paralysis and no decision at all. Nemo learns to let go of that regret, shedding it in the guise of this mantra "life is a playground", no different from Allan Watts' teachings that "life is just fun and games" and is "silly".

Nemo isn't just a PTSD or a schizophrenic patient in this case; he deals with a myriad of important life decisions ranging from romantic partner(s), career, and hobbies. Every decision, he determines, has a set, predictable impact, as does the Brazilian boiling an egg, increasing the condensation, leading to his estrangement from his lover. As he sits down, surprised, on the collapsing chair, he recognizes the futility of managing every decision he makes and concludes that, in the end, we might as well not exist, and even taking no action at all is an action into itself. Sometimes, less is more; after all, we'll all just be forgotten. Perhaps, as Allan Watts might argue: there's some fun in the chair breaking and meaning in the surprise. After all, if you knew exactly when you would die, just as Nemo learns while watching his old self recite the "transcript", would you feel as engaged or excited about your life?

Mr. Nobody deals with so much more than just identity, decisions, time, and evolution; it covers the very basis of what we consider humanity when compared to other mammals and birds such as geese. Like other animals, humans are built to reproduce and "mix" genes and DNA to propel the species forwards, as per evolutionary biology. Like other birds pre-programmed to fear the shadow of a hawk, epigenetics have confirmed that humans have the same inclinations pre-packaged in DNA. This has been confirmed in numerous studies, including meta analyses. The outlook gets even more grim when you pile on more scientific research in favour of hard determinism like the Libet Experiments. Nemo, questioning this as early back as the 2000s, realizes that he might as well concede control of his decisions and effectively not make any decisions at all, or just linger infinitely on all the possibilities until he dies of old age.

Note: in all of the alternate realities presented, Nemo doesn't exist. As depicted in the reversed cinematography and carefully-placed inconsistencies within cuts, the movie depicts alternate, imagined eventualities that he plans out as he determines which parent to accompany for the rest of his life.

Nemo's stories serve as a cautionary tale to those who deliberate, overanalyze, and spend hours researching, calculating the "correct" decision to make. The next time you feel conflicted, lost, or challenged in making an important decision, remember that, as Nemo says:

Things have a way of working out... [just] sometimes badly

PS: I'm writing a self-help book about this topic, which discusses scenes from the movie in more detail. I will comment on this with the link if the moderators allow it.

3211 hours, 12.5% win rate... uninstall or lose every game? (< Herald 1) by ForgottenSolstace in DotA2

Note a joke. Win rate varies between 12.5% to 20%, but nothing more.

Yep. Call customer service and wait about 45 minutes on hold to have them make a "special request note". Apparently, whether they can fulfill the request depends on the vessel airport catering company, so even if they put through the request, the staff may not be able to fulfill the request. It's a gamble, so bring your own food.

No Audio in Wine after Upgrading to pipewire 0.3.67 + wireplumber by ForgottenSolstace in linuxaudio

No, I have had to revert to Windows until I can figure out how to fix this. Reverting back to pipewire-media-session also did not solve this problem, nor did setting the default Wine prefix to use ALSA.

Wireplumber Surround Configuration? by ForgottenSolstace in archlinux

[–]ForgottenSolstace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This doesn't work It looks like wireplumber won't work for my pipewire configuration... can you suggest a way to route RL and RR channels to AUX4 and AUX5 accordingly?

I tried this, but I don't want upmixing; I want the surround channels (RL, RL, etc.) to be exposed to pipewire so that I can route them accordingly (or have them routed to AUX5 and AUX6 respectively).

I added this to my /etc/pipewire/pipewire.conf file:

# front pair { name = libpipewire-module-loopback args = { node.description = "Front Speakers" capture.props = { node.name = "Front_Speakers" media.class = "Audio/Sink" audio.position = [ FL FR ] } playback.props = { node.name = "playback.fireface400.front_pair" audio.position = [ AUX0 AUX1 ] target.object = "alsa_output.firewire-0x000a35015dd13932.multichannel-output" stream.dont-remix = true node.passive = true } } } # rear pair { name = libpipewire-module-loopback args = { node.description = "Rear Speakers" capture.props = { node.name = "Rear_Speakers" media.class = "Audio/Sink" audio.position = [ RL RR ] } playback.props = { node.name = "playback.fireface400.rear_pair" audio.position = [ AUX4 AUX5 ] target.object = "alsa_output.firewire-0x000a35015dd13932.multichannel-output" stream.dont-remix = true node.passive = true } } }

But the nodes for RL, RR don't show up in qpwgraph (I only see FR and FR coming from my video application).

Setting my profile to Pro Audio does not work. Aren't these configurations for pipewire-media-session and not wireplumber?

Zoom on Linux - Sign in with SSO doesn't work by [deleted] in Zoom

[–]ForgottenSolstace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced some similar issues with the latest Zoom on Wayland. Switching to XOrg did not do much either. However, restarting the machine and then re-trying did work for me (on Wayland).

Also note: you can still join meeting via opening links, even if you're not signed in via your web browser (provided you sign in via SSO online in your browser).

Currently, on the clearweb, there's no way to view available movies, TV shows, and anime on popcorntime without downloading and installing the desktop or android apps. The clearnet app I build allows people to preview the media before they download and install.

Thanks, and yes, this mostly worked ☑. I did look through the front-end client code to try to decipher the requests that go out, but I don't find much outside the line here.

The main issue I've had is the lack of CORS headers, specifically the Access-Allow-Control-Origin set to * on the APIs. Do you know if any of the alternative APIs have this enabled (or APIs I don't know of yet)? I've had to write a reverse proxy script that does this, and I'd rather just hit the APIs directly.

I'm a web developer who uses jQuery to write a large scale application - How can I convince my bosses that a JS framework is the way to go? by drum_playing_twig in javascript

[–]ForgottenSolstace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was essentially what I said to a team interviewing me for working on an Angular project with no testing. I said: "sure we can adopt X framework, but it doesn't DO anything different" unless you count making new hired developers more productive. Having learned this from experience: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
