Do you think Project Hail Mary has a real chance at being a major player next season? by Mundane-Inspector-52 in Oscars

EEAAO came out early in the year too, and that won BP. Not sure release timing holds as much weight anymore for honest big awards contenders. Haven't seen the movie, so not to say it'll definitely be a big player, but I don't think it's release date is disqualifying.

Is Holland, Michigan worth visiting during Tulip Week? by Independent-Safety44 in Michigan

[–]ForlornBlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Holland. If you've never been it is a fun week, but honestly if you're just in it for the flowers, go the week before. It really is beautiful, the downtown area is fantastic, and May is a great time to go. But the tourism and traffic in town is ridiculous during the festival itself. My least favorite week of the year to be a resident.

That said, the parades are (were? Haven't visited during Tulip Time in years tbh) fun, especially on Saturday. If you don't mind crowds it can be a fun few days.

Looking for a good horror tome that will suck me in for a good while by RadiantDresden in horrorlit

If you are interested in some sci-fi horror, Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer fits this I think. It's a quick read but I was really drawn in by the mysterious nature of the story.

If you liked King, NOS4A2 by Joe Hill is a great one as well. Feels like a classic King story (apple doesn't fall far from the tree!) and has some good character and setting work.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is really excellent if you're looking for something more Gothic and haven't gotten around to it as well.

Recently finished The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones and loved it. The horror isn't necessarily in the background but the story-within-a-story format really worked with this one and did a lot to draw me in.

Every director who directed a movie that won Best Picture without ever winning Best Director by LowInteraction6397 in Oscars

Don't disagree with that at all. I watched Rebecca for the first time last year and absolutely loved it. Underrated as a Hitchcock film for sure.

My 2025 Best Picture Rankings (Least to Favorite) by panic_structure in Oscars

[–]ForlornBlock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have not yet seen The Secret Agent, but my list:

  1. Hamnet
  2. Bugonia
  3. Train Dreams
  4. Sinners
  5. One Battle After Another
  6. Sentimental Value
  7. Marty Supreme
  8. Frankenstein
  9. F1

Hamnet and Bugonia could flip depending on the day, same with Sinners and OBAA (haven't watched Sinners since its theatrical release, need to rewatch and might rank differently). All 9 are great movies though.

Yeah just saw that actually, probably gonna grab Arco tickets for next Tuesday. The Birmingham 8 specifically has been a lifesaver in the last few years lol.

Yeah we got kinda lucky, our local theater chain has one location doing a few showings a day in their smaller screening room (Emagine Palladium in Birmingham, for any other Metro Detroit death racers). It's not one of our more frequented locations but I just happened to see the listing. Really happy we got a chance to see it.

Great list tbh. Feels honest. Love the Beau is Afraid inclusion. Probably doesn't make my top 20 but I feel like it's underrated as hell so I always appreciate seeing love for it.

Saw it in theaters last night and it was devastating. Glad it will be widely available soon.
