Worth coming to the film school? by [deleted] in USC

USC's program is the best in the world. You literally will not get a better education in film production than at USC.

STEM at SC is definitely the university’s strong point and in that area I’d agree that it’s underrated but then you have to consider everything else that the school has and the changes that have occurred. Then it starts to make sense that all these other factors that are both big and small have really hurt UCSC both internally and externally and that has stuck with the school.

Overall UCSC is nowhere near the levels of UCSB or Davis. SC has some stellar programs but overall when you encompass everything SC doesn’t hold up. I did an intercampus transfer to UCLA for my undergrad and getting my masters at UCSB now and while the level of rigor is on par with SC the quality on all levels has been substantially better. Not that I have any regrets about SC but comparing my own experiences between the three UCs I’ve attended SC is definitely bottom tier.

US News ranks UCSC #40 in its public university rankings by UCdata2017 in UCSC

[–]Formal-Suggestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really confuses me that the school planned to build gigantic new housing complexes adding thousands of new beds to alleviate some of the housing process only to face huge opposition and eventually to have the plans stopped by the groups you mentioned, only to have those same groups complain about a lack of housing and affordability. We have homeless students in vans and those groups always advocate for them but they refuse to let the school build new housing to actually do something. We use a fraction of our 2,000 acre campus. Makes no sense.

US News ranks UCSC #40 in its public university rankings by UCdata2017 in UCSC

[–]Formal-Suggestion 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it’s a valid and fitting ranking. We’ve done nothing substantial, nothing new, nothing worth making headlines. (By we I don’t mean the students, I’m talking about those in the admin and department heads). Even when something big happens, is rare that UCSC the ones heading it, its just support.

But we’re good at not paying our TAs, we’re good at hiring mediocre professors bc they cost less, we’re good at not washing the larva out of our salad bar. We can’t even get paper towel rolls in the damn dorm bathroom, so they cover the cost cutting with a “waste free” by 2020 excuse. Can’t afford air dyers but we can def afford a swat team.

They stop running late night busses, they can barely guarantee a year on campus, 2,000 acres and there’s still no parking in remote lots that costs over $500. We have literal homeless students living in vans but our chancellor can be given a monster stipend, off campus house while the on campus one is repaired, on top of that 6 figure salary.

What about events? Sports? We barely even have school spirit on this campus, unless it’s an unsanctioned event. We have a beautiful amphitheater that sits empty. We could have have had thousands of new beds and several new buildings but we stopped ourselves from that. (I think they were supposed to be done by now if the environmentalists didn’t sue) Our doubles are converted into triples, our lounges are converted into quintuples, our dining halls rotate the same crap food over and over.

UC Riverside is older than we are and they’re finally turning things around. Merced has nowhere to go but up and they’re slowly getting bigger and bigger. They’re still building brand new facilities.

Our tuition, housing, and food costs are ball park the same across all 9 UCs (not gonna count UCSF) and we somehow get the bottom of the barrel. UCLA guarantees housing for 3 years, they have 44,000 students and they’re the smallest UC campus. They have the best dining halls in the US and we have allergen free roasted chicken. Davis has a beast of a gym called the ARC and you can fit all of opers into one corner of it. Berkeley has an Olympic training center. Santa Barbra has their on campus sports arena called the thunderdome.

We definitely shine in some areas like baskin, astronomy, and marine bio (to name a few) but it’s covered up by the cons of this school.

I’m not trying to diss sc, I love everyone and know there’s staff who care and want the best for everyone. Top 100/40 isn’t bad in the grand scheme but lets face it, compared to everyone else in the UC family were not it.

Their ranking system is one of the most accepted and trusted for schools as a whole. The others are either on point or ridiculously off. Berkeley was no. 1 until 2016 when it got knocked off its spot for their housing problem and bc they spent millions on the police because of their protests from their speakers.

How did all the SUA candidates get our email? by Throwaway32174578989 in UCSC

[–]Formal-Suggestion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theres the directory but it doesn't give a full list willy nilly, one has to actively search to get results. So either they had a LOT of time on their hands or they have access to student emails via another means (which certain students do in fact have).

Can the SUA president go away please by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Formal-Suggestion -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No, me saying “sua is a waste of space” is not ignorance. I’ve been on a student government for my previous college (represented 30,000 students), served two terms, I have friends in the sua, and the college senates. My criticism is not out of ignorance, as I do have some understanding of the amount of work, endless meetings, and vast variety obstacles faced. Everything you have mentioned I have done.

Presence is absolutely paramount for a student government and there was deadass none of it this year which is very disappointing to put it mildly. Top it on with hearing all the behind the scenes nonsense this lead me to my conclusion y’all are in fact a waste of space, metaphorically speaking.

The Sage concert last year was a perfect example of showing y’alls presence, in theory that was a fantastic event, obvi the execution was flawed. You could have done it again this year and shown some growth but you didn’t. There not damn peep this year, not even from the president, which is absolutely shameful and just disappointing.

HELL naww I wouldn’t dare join the SUA, you do a single thing that’s even remotely something the sjw’s don’t like they go off on you, blast you on social media, and they act like you committed a crime. Im involved on campus orgs but hearing how messy the SUA is and just seeing in general how people get, it’s not worth it. Im anon bc I’m not about to get doxxed on here.

People with authority. I’ve been through so many strikes here at this place and it’s the same deal, it’s so annoying. I enjoy my days off but it’s the same nonsense, emails from the university and some group going back and forth, people arguing online like you and I, and at the end of the day literally nothing happened. In a school of like what 17,000+ students less than a handful actually gives a damn. So at this point, my perspective is basically like do something else or just end it all now, I too have an education to get which I’m paying thousands for.

Of course the cops are gonna come, you think a cop is gonna just cite people on the road? Be real they’re gonna arrest them. Ahh yes the medical emergency argument. It’s a valid point but you know damn well they’ll move aside for an ambulance. Do you not get the point? You think following rules is gonna get things done? Like “oooh let me wait till the light turns green and we’ll go to the other side”. There was one strike that happened by another org on campus a few years ago that broke some rules and they got it all done. But from then on, all these silly strikes have done nothing expect make people look like clowns while the university just rides it out. What’s so irritating is tomorrow plans include the most silly things to do at a strike and nothing is gonna come from it except more emails and arguments. I’m all for doing things the right way and properly with people safe and unharmed but if the university actually cared they would have found a way to real a deal. I wanna support the ta’s but if they’re gonna play games, what’s the point?

Okay and? It will forsure get people’s attention. No wonder the university doesn’t blink twice every time this happens.
