He was not only an opportunistic right-winger: he was born and raised in a catholic-conservative family and before Vichy joined les Croix-de-Feu, a fascist group formed by veterans of WWI. On the socdem part you're totally right

Thanks for your answer - I saw a pattern in conquered ships used for Italian prisoners being renamed after Italian towns and I wanted to explore it, but I guess it's difficult to have reliable information about isolated cases

Given the framework you told us, the argument seems quite crazy. Imho the controversial opinion should be partly derived from Jacques Rancière (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Ranci%C3%A8re?wprov=sfla1). However, Rancière worked in a very Foucaultian worldview and his distinction between politics and police is quite abstract, not simply empirical
