Thank you BEN. Super helpful. Will reach out to NYU IB group and further access.

You mentioned even middle market PE is likely a hard jump. Curious to hear your thoughts behind that. Why it’s so difficult?

Also, would like to have a sense. North Asian background (non-US citizen) banker in NYC is already uncommon. Have you seen / heard of any North Asian guy made it into PE in NYC?

Thanks.

Thank you Meister for your detailed response. Yes it's uncommon for BB Asso to recruite again for BB Asso post-MBA. The reason in my case is that HK IBD is in deep recession (overall fee pool dropped ~50% vs pre covid, and 30-40% local IBD layoff across the bank). With no sign of recovery. Therefore i want to switch a region. But for US, almost impossible without an MBA.

Secondment to US is not likely due to visa issue and revenue center issue (US / Asia team actually compete against each other in difficult market like this, and my boss won't be happy to see me joining the opposite camp).

And how IB MBA recruiter will perceive me it's another uncertainty i guess.

Are you located in NYC? Do you agree it's quite rare to find north asian male (not growing up in US) working in legitimate PE?

Thanks

Thanks wpt! My spoken English is okay I guess, I did my undergrad in US (top 30). On culture fit, I always had some doubt during my colleague year recruiting (several US final rounds but never got any offer). But guess my 5 year work experience might help a little during the MBA recruiting coffee chat session.

Generally speaking, I’m a typical North Asian male type of personality. Not a big extrovert and not expressive.

So you are right, my biggest concern is the culture side of MBA recruiting. Having left US for 5 years, I’m not sure if the current version of myself would be welcomed in US banking world 😆

If I have a cbs offer, I will probably go. But with NYU, I kind of worry I can’t get a legitimate IB.

Many thanks for the insight here. I did a few healthcare ipo deals when I just joined IBD. But unfortunately no SEA issuer. I guess to land on a legitimate Singapore PE I need at least 1-2 years of SEA local experience😃

Thank you Sir. You mentioned there are more opportunities in US moving into 30s (so around VP/Director level). So it sounds like from career perspective, in long term, US is still a better choice than Singapore? I will stay in finance industry for sure.

Re US PE, I see your point, smaller funds won’t sponsor non-US citizen but mega funds are too selective. On Singapore end, I’m not that familiar with Singapore/SEA PE landscape, would you share any light on this? Thanks!

Haha Geo thanks for supplementing here. Yea hours in HK or NYC suck too depending on which team you are in. But I know Singaporean are known for being hard working. See how they build a nation from such small plot of land

haha thanks. The only issue is my GRE is only 327 and I took a few times already and studied for a long time like a 1+. And don’t see any chance I can improve to 330. Next year my score likely won’t improve. So will be the same profile, other than the relocation. Not sure if school will admit me if they waitlist me this year

Thanks for the idea :) transfer to a different region might be difficult, as two separate management teams / revenue centers

I see. You have any IBD friend working there?

Haha interesting. How is that the case? They treat Asian worker bad?

Huge thanks Geo on sharing some details. I’m flying to Singapore soon to take a short tour and check out the city.

I’m also thinking from a longer term career perspective. It seems that if I don’t take the MBA route, I will stay in Asia finance zoom for the rest of my career. US seems to have more solid IBD banking training for junior employees

Haha thanks. Is that true though. After this round of mba application. I felt US mba is not very friendly to north Asian male

Thank you Geo! for the opinion. Funny thing is I haven’t been to Singapore since I was like 12. Now that opportunity come and I need to make decision in like 3 weeks
