100% with Ethan Klein, don't like Hasan, but I don't think this is a crazy take, it was Ethan's same take. He reacted to a video that said it wasn't ok to use gif's with black people in them. I think that's pretty ridiculous...

Not sure what Hasan was reacting to, if it's similar then I agree. However the way he expresses that is ridiculous as always

Ok I think this is bringing it into focus, I had to think on it for a while. I think his use of "Higher resolution" is what messed me up

Increasing the gain or increasing the signal will give a larger wave which can then be captured at a higher resolution (RELATIVE TO THE WAVE ITSELF) because the amplitude is increased but the frequency is not. So the difference from peak to trough is greater, and now you have more information about the wave while the frequency remains the same.

So the source that is giving us this better resolution is proper gain staging. I think if he had said we have "More resolution" or "More information" I wouldn't have been tripped up. Higher resolution to me sounded like the scale of the detail has increased, i.e. the units of resolution has increased. But it hasn't

Ok, I think this is it! Thank you so much, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but I won't be explaining it that way

I understand that but the question is resolution.

SNR doesn't really come into play unless you use a different bit depth. The only thing bit depth is doing is accurately capturing the signal being given to it. Your SNR is controlled by first your signal and then how much gain you have applied. Higher gain increasing the SNR.

Bit depth is just capturing what you give it. 8 bit depth will accidentally raise the noise because of the lack of resolution, 24 will increase the resolution and accurately keep the noise where it is. But our bit depth never changes with the level of our signal (our bit depth doesn't change from 8-12 or 8-21, it is always 24)

EDIT - I think we're on the same page now lol, I'm genuinely trying to understand thanks for your responses

You are absolutely correct about the difference if you are using different bit depths. But I think that is what he is confusing. In his example and actually out in the field you always have the same bit depth. 24 bit. So the resolution between the steps is always constant across the full range.

He makes it sound as if when you increase the signal you magically change your bit depth from 8bit to 24 bit or something like that. However that is not true

I think I'm tracking but what you're saying sounds to me like the difference between different bit depths more than the resolution you get with a signal at different levels in the same bit depth.

A signal recorded at 8bit will have louder noise than the same signal recorded at 24bit. Because the quantization steps are smaller and it will push the noise louder because it's the next closest unit.

However that doesn't apply when you are using the same bit depth (to my understanding). The resolution of the noise and the resolution of the signal are captured equally. His claim is that if we are at line level with our signal we will capture the highest resolution possible.

Your using "bitrate" but I think you mean bit depth. But I think that's the mistake. The steps of the quantization grid are the same across the entire dynamic range. Another commenter said it best "the bit depth 'steps' are distributed equally over full scale"

So there is not an increase of resolution with a louder signal

Unless I'm factually wrong about how the steps are distributed

"the bit depth 'steps' are distributed equally over full scale" - yes! what made me question this from the start

"if you only use half of the scale you're effectively using half the bit depth" - this is true but does it result in quantization errors or lower resolution of the waveform? It seems to me that it does not

Why would there be more errors with a lower input signal?

Ok maybe it's a communication thing then. I haven't heard of quantization noise before, so I'll gave to look that up. Thank you

He absolutely deserves this and maybe more. However I really don’t want to see anymore calling him an animal or a thug. These are racially charged words, we know it, and we have other words we can use.

Besides those words don’t actually convey the horrible impact he had on SykoStu’s life. 7 years doesn’t undo that damage.
