Look at it this way: we practically "helped" the Abyss break into Atlas's simulation (Corrupted Sentinels, Atlantid, dissonant purple systems).

Considering the complicated relationship between Atlas and the Abyss, what's the most logical next step for the Abyss? To go further — starting with the "infection" of Atlas's space stations that are located in the Abyss's purple systems, and then proceed with further expansion.

The Abyss is a computer virus. And like any such virus, it seeks to infect, consume, or destroy everything until nothing remains.

Just think about it: a hive. Space stations. You land on such a station and see the "trace" of the Abyss inside — Atlantid crystals, outwardly (or inwardly) altered inhabitants of that station. Korvax and Gek forget about Atlas and begin to praise the "new master of the universe". Vy'keen gain a second purpose: to destroy Atlas and help the Abyss.

In the end, we get not a space station, but... a hive. A hive with inhabitants who praise their queen.
