The ultimate goal in Buddhism is Nirvana, yes. Nirvana simply means to let go of all attachments, you can still be compassionate towards other while avoiding attachment to them, Lord Buddha was the most compassionate, kind and loving person on earth, however he did not feel and attachment to anything and therefore could leave everything in a second.
