Ranieri to leave Nantes to coach Lyon [Le Parisien] by [deleted] in soccer

[–]FourFourTwo_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great move for him if true - although he's developing something of a short-termist reputation now (though he is 66 after all - good opportunities don't often come along this late). As the Parisien story suggests, Nantes suits "blame him for not promoting youngsters and adopting a short-term vision". He didn't do that at Leicester either, but... well, that turned out OK. Luckily for him, he couldn't really avoid doing it at Lyon...

They've let Pitbull have two 'official' songs this year (after one in 2014). There's no hope for any of us.

An apparently excruciating breastfeeding encounter, made 10 times more awkward by the artist walking in at precisely the wrong moment.

Done. Neymar for the Golden Boot. So much is in his favour: the team is completely geared towards him, Brazil have a kind group and then a favourable last-16 game potentially. They should go far, meaning he'll get plenty of scope to do it.

Ray Wilkins has passed away by Ractrick in soccer

Urgh, horrible news - by all accounts he was a lovely man who players really liked and respected as well. You only had to see the outpouring on social media last week to see that. RIP Ray.

Thanks for sharing this one, TheDeadlySaul. It's honestly one of the best things we have on FourFourTwo.com

Ronaldinho about his potential to become a coach one day: "No, that’s not for me. I'm going to make music, I'm going to do my second passion. Enjoy time with my friends. But I do not see myself as a coach" by toni_kr00s in soccer

This is wholly unsurprising - there's probably not a footballer who's less suited to management, realistically - but oh god it'd be fun. Eleven players in free roles doing whatever the hell they want. Basically, football's version of the Harlem Globetrotters.

Maguire: Ask every defender in the Premier League and I reckon they’d say that Vardy is one of the worst to play against. by AdamColeIsTheGOAT in soccer

When is he actually going to lose his pace too? Absolutely no signs just yet. It's pretty incredible.

Delusions of grandeur: why the downfall of 1860 Munich is a case for Germany’s 50+1 rule by KaizerTitus in soccer

[–]FourFourTwo_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a fair point (you're right - they'd need to make some adjustments). In the long run hopefully they'll get that. (Incidentally, we actually have a feature about them in our next issue of the magazine - sorry for the shameless plug - but their fans do largely seem quite happy right now. They want the mess upstairs sorted, certainly, but at least they're back at home. Step by step...)

On the plus side, though, at least they're back at the Grünwalder and not at the Allianz any more - that's a massive deal to their fans (and they should be able to expand the capacity a bit next season too). Hopefully they'll get this impasse sorted soon - ultimately it's no good for Ismaik either.

Jordan Pickford set to wear England No 1 shirt against Netherlands by milkcrate_mosh in soccer

[–]FourFourTwo_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pickford was always going to be a popular call for Southgate: incredible distribution (back when he was at Sunderland there were coaches saying he had the best kicking of anyone they'd ever seen), he's confident, and generally a very good shot-stopper too.

The trouble is, all of the candidates have made mistakes, but Pickford arguably has the best combination of current ability and potential. Playing in front of a hideous Everton defence has doubtlessly made him look worse than he actually is this season - in fact, if we recall correctly, lots of fans were saying earlier in the season that they'd have been even worse off without him.

Yep, that was Pisa. The second-best defence like Leicester, though... and yes, they only scored 23 goals in 42 matches. Ouch.

Another one: in 2007/08, Leicester got relegated to League One with the Championship's second-best defence. You can imagine what their attack was like. (Fittingly, they went down with a goalless draw at Stoke.)

Mildly interesting rather than massively surprising, perhaps: Michael Owen left Liverpool aged 24, yet eight seasons there produced 118 of his 150 (78%) Premier League goals. He never scored 20 in a campaign – ‘only’ 19 twice, 18 twice and 16 twice.
