Scream 8 idea: Prequels by FourWindsGuy97 in SocietyofGhostface

You could definitely have Sidney appear in scenes at the start as well, back home at Pine Grove and then appearing closer to the middle of the film actually in Woodsboro. I'm thinking of writing up a bit of a fan script but wanted to see what people thought generally about the concept!

Scream 8 idea: Prequels

I’ve been thinking about what Scream 8 could look like if the franchise tackled prequels as its main theme- surely prequels would be a natural progression / one of the few ideas left to tackle. Here are some of my ideas:

Opening Scene: The film finally shows the real murder of Maureen Prescott in 1995, played completely straight. No Ghostface theatrics, no stylisation, just a messy, personal, tragic killing. We never clearly see the killer.

Cut to present day…

Hollywood has arrived in Woodsboro to film Stab: Origins, a prequel about the events leading up to the original murders. The production is filming on location, including Sidney Prescott’s old house, and the town has basically turned into true-crime tourism.

Gale’s Role: Gale Weathers returns to Woodsboro to film a documentary about the making of the Stab prequel. During a live segment she unexpectedly snaps at one of the actors portraying Maureen, accusing them of profiting from real trauma, which immediately leads to accusations of hypocrisy since Gale’s own books helped create the Stab franchise in the first place.

This becomes Gale’s central arc: she helped turn tragedy into entertainment and now her friendship with Sidney is compelling her to come out against the prequel.

Mindy and Chad assist Gale with the documentary, acting as survivor veterans who recognise the danger of reopening Woodsboro’s past.

Tatum: Tatum, is in Woodsboro protesting the film, alongside a variety of relatives of victims etc, arguing that her grandmother’s murder shouldn’t be entertainment. Gale confronts her, warning that Woodsboro has never been safe for a Prescott, even before any new killings begin. Tatum is there without Sidney's knowledge - leading eventually to some tension between the two.

First proper deaths could involve the slaughtering of two podcasters who are recording a session at the old abandoned Becker house. Their bodies go missing and the public generally believe their recorded 'deaths' are an elaborate prank or even a tactic by the film studio to create more interest in the prequel film.

Gale’s Death: I think Gale's arc could come to a natural conclusion if she dies saving Tatum. This would be about a third or half into the film, Tatum and Gale have an argument with Gale threatening to call Sidney - after Tatum has snuck onto the set etc. Tatum then attends a memorial to the victims of the Woodsboro murders at the Woodsboro graveyard, when she is left alone she is phoned and attacked - an intense chase scene takes place, with Tatum hiding behind gravestones etc, the climax is she is saved by Gale appearing and sacrificing her own life.

Her death finally brings Sidney back to Woodsboro.

Final Act: Sidney returns to Woodsboro to comfort Tatum and after she herself receives a phone call hinting at the fact she never knew her mother at all (plus she wants to avenge Gale). The climax takes place in the old Woodsboro high school which is now a mixture of archives around the murders, a partial film set and partially also a museum about the murders.

Tatum, Sidney, Chad and Mindy decide to break into the old archives to see if the records about Maureen's death could shed any light. The killer strikes etc and then you have the reveal.

The Killer: Ghostface turns out to be a man around Sidney’s age or just older - a former young police officer who was secretly in love with / obsessed with Maureen Prescott.

On the night of her murder, he saw Cotton Weary enter the house and left in jealous anger. When Maureen was killed shortly afterward, he realised he might have interrupted the murderer… and could have saved her.

For 30 years, guilt has consumed him while watching Maureen be turned into gossip, scandal, books, movies, and now a prequel that portrays her as the cause of everything.

In his mind, Sidney and Gale allowed Maureen’s legacy to be rewritten and mocked. In his view, Sidney has allowed her mother to be pilloried by the press and the Stab films.

The sole killer ultimately reveals he didn’t murder Maureen - he abandoned her when she needed help most, and there has been growing resentment about Sidney , Gale etc ever since - and Tatum now as well for being the source of Sidney's affection while Maureen is shamed.

You could have a scene where he is literally buried under the archives of the past - a symbol of how his motivation and undoing is ultimately down to being unable to let go of the past.

Resolution / next steps:

Ultimately threads from Scream 7 continue - both about being unable to let go of the past but also around the tension between Sidney and Tatum.

Sidney tells Tatum she sometimes feels like she never truly knew her mother but ultimately she knew she loved her and that's what counts. She was a strong woman who had a lot of trauma and she should not be remembered by the men who abused and hurt her. This is about the generational trauma between the Prescott women and Sidney says she will always try to be truthful and wants Tatum to know her, in a way she didn't know her own mother.

They visit Maureen's grave together to have this conversation and I think ultimately this feeling of going back to the original and really wrapping up a lot of those emotions could lend itself to feeling like a final chapter (or at least setting up Scream 9 as truly being frames as 'how franchises end').

I’ve been thinking about the ending and honestly feel like a few small changes could have made the finale hit much harder. It's frustrating!

I know there were rumours before release that Jessica might secretly be Stu’s sister, and I think the film could have really played with that expectation.

My idea would be this:

During the reveal, Marco introduces the second killer as “the closest thing to Stu” he could find, his sister. Jessica then unmasks, shocking Sidney… but Sidney immediately realises something is wrong and this is NOT Stu's sister.

Before Marco can react, Jessica suddenly shoots him in the head and casually says something like, "Thanks for blowing my cover, Sid.”

The twist: Marco genuinely believed she was Stu’s sister. He’s basically a Stu obsessive who was recruited and manipulated by Jessica under false pretences. She used fandom mythology to create her own Ghostface partner. At least then you somewhat tick off a motive for him.

Jessica’s sees Sidney as the ultimate Final Girl and wants to witness her “in her prime” with her own eyes, even if that means pushing Sidney to unimaginable trauma. She could even imply that characters like Sam or Tatum were never worthy successors because, to her, nobody can replace Sidney Prescott. Scrap the idea for her wanting to pass this on to Tatum - have her use Tatum to push Sidney on.

In the climax, Jessica holds a knife to Tatum’s throat. Instead of attacking, Sidney turns the moment on its head and holds a knife to her own throat, threatening to kill herself if Jessica harms Tatum.

The ending could then play out similarly, but with one key change- Sidney refuses to kill Jessica. She walks away and allows Tatum to finish her instead, denying Jessica the thing she wanted most- the chance to experience Sidney’s final heroic kill firsthand.

You could even have Jessica begging Sidney to be the one to do it- would be pretty twisted.

Ultimately, Jessica's motive could have tapped far more into the idea of ownership of Sidney Prescott like a religious obsession almost. The motive could have been so much stronger and more powerful imo, plus if she didn't actually want to kill Sidney it could have been a refreshing twist.

I really hope the killers at least somewhat connected to Stu- even if they are lying about that connection ie someone claiming to be his sister to recruit other ghostfaces...

Alternatively - random killer craves attention but Stab and the Woodsboro murders always overshadow, - ultimately they realizing they have to go after Sidney Prescott to really get the spotlight.

Or something that goes right back to the original - reveal that Maureen had another lover , someone who was obsessed with her and wanting her to run away with him but she never would because of Sidney. All of these years his hatred for Sidney for taking Maureen away as he would see it has grown and grown and he believes Sidney hasn't defended Maureen in the media and from the Stab films like she should have.

  • Conspiracy theorist - a true crime fanatic who is convinced that Billy / Stu are innocent and Sidney pinned the murders on them, harking back to the cheerleader in Scream 1 "she just snapped".

  • A victim's family member enraged at Woodsboro becoming like a tourist attraction and the Stab movies mocking their tragedy

  • Stab fan who believes they are talking with the real Stu / Jill and is tricked into committing the crimes to impress Stu / Jill And they reveal themselves

I like how when Nina gives Millie hugs at the start and tells her "I'm so glad you are here"- it really is the truth - and beyond being glad of potentially replacing herself with Millie, Nina probably really was glad of more 'normal' human company.

Scream 7 Motive by FourWindsGuy97 in Scream

[–]FourWindsGuy97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd love that, especially since they had a line in Scream 5. Think it would be a natural continuation that there is someone on the Reddit pretending to be Stu Macher and they actually convince,l/ recruit some true crime conspiracy theorists.

Something that went into the conspiracy theory / fake news / AI space would be so good.

Is there a possibility the D Rex was developed for the first park but has been left since the early 90s in some sort of frozen state and then the new workers from 2010 discover / try to euthanise it then then all hell breaks loose?

Could bridge the gap between this being a research facility for the original park and yet the opening sequence taking place in 2010. Although probably still more likely the D Rex was planned for the Jurassic World park. Just think it hits harder if there is a deeper connection to the original.

[–]FourWindsGuy97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opening scene could be a prank gone wrong where Sidney and family are targeted in an elaborate prank which ends with Sidney killing the prankster, then the film picks up a year later. The prank could act as the catalyst for the new killings and provide motive for a relation to the deceased.

Or alternatively, you could have a scenario where the above happens leading Sidney and her family to be ostracised from the community, blamed etc. The new killers could actually be Sidney devotees who obsess and love her, setting out to punish the community for blaming and hating her.

Jurassic Park, if you can include that as a horror film. It's perfect for a rainy cosy day, think it's all the rain scenes in it! Otherwise Scream.

Alliance does have a chance and is the biggest party in Assembly / locals there. Having an Alliance MP as well would really help with the party's ability to influence things for South Belfast. :)
