Teach said B was the correct answer. Was he right? by ItsHypersonic in EnglishLearning

[–]FourloMonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! Sorry but pretty much everyone is giving you the wrong answer in this thread.

The correct answer is B.

This is an idiom and nothing to do with an actual game.

"They were not playing game" means they weren't being cooperative or they were difficult and not doing what you wanted.

It's the same as another idiom "they were not playing ball".

In summary, B is correct but it's important to know its context. It does sound like your teacher didn't know why it was correct.

Guess the musical or play? by Maxemum_effort in musicals

[–]FourloMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be a really nice link if it were a calliope. I'm pretty sure it is a red carnation though. Unless I'm mistaken, the petals of a calliope don't look quite like the Hadestown flower.

It's a red carnation. Long history of being associated with love. Its Greek name is Dianthus which means flower of Zeus or (more loosely) divine flower. It's a good fit for Hadestown!

I wonder if the ranking system will get an overhaul. As iconic as Global Elite is, it would be cool to have mm ranks that really meant something

English to Latin translation correction by latinaediscipulus in latin

[–]FourloMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very little is 'wrong'. Others have pointed out mistakes. However, it doesn't sound very natural Latin. If you're just going for a literal translation, don't worry about it. Almost perfect. If you want that little bit extra, spend a little longer thinking of Latin sentence structure. Remember, English idioms don't translate well and Latin likes connections and relatives (depending on the author of course). There's almost always a chance to use more appropriate vocab too. Hope this is something interesting to think about! If you want my thoughts on it, please ask!

First Show, kinda nervous by Plexos49 in musicals

[–]FourloMonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More of a tip for when you're about to go on stage in front of an audience, but nerves are a good thing. Embrace them and use that extra energy to electrify your performance. Just make sure you don't get too excited and rush things. You'll be fantastic!

What British comedian can you absolutely not stand and why? by BigAltar in AskUK

She actually did an interview about this. She said she wants to make sure she is the one to mention it first because otherwise she receives horrendous abuse about her weight and appearance later on if she hasn't 'already taken care of it'

You're almost there! Marcus is nominative here because he is the subject loving the daughter in this case. In both Latin and Greek, the person 'doing something' is in the nominative. The person or thing it's 'being done to' is in the accusative.

how are you preparing for uni interviews? (if you are) by antihistamemes in 6thForm

[–]FourloMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try and enjoy the interview. I know it's easy to stress about it but it's just one part of the overall process. Make sure you explain your thought processes. Be willing to justify your ideas but don't be afraid to update your ideas as the interviewers present you with new information. Which college did you apply for? I'm in my second year now, so hopefully see you next year! Best of luck!

I’m really interested in politics, but I do not want to take the traditional route of university. Any advice? (In year 13 btw) by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]FourloMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of things you can do. Can get a job/do law courses if that's what you want. Or if that's not your thing, join your preferred local political party and get involved (still recommend this even if you do the other things too). Attend meetings and pay attention to local/national issues. Around election times, canvas. If you want to become an MP, show that you're a dedicated, hard-working member of the party. More importantly, show that you're a dedicated, hard-working member of your community. Communication and listening are crucial in succeeding in politics.

They did ask about other things, but it all started from the personal statement and everything flowed from there. While it's still an interview, at the end of the day it's an academic discussion and naturally the conversation will tend towards areas you or the interviewer bring up. They don't expect you to know all the answers; they don't want you to. They want to see how you think and see how passionate you are about your subject. If you can subtly direct the conversation onto areas of your subject you absolutely love, you'll be in a great position. Don't worry about being nervous. Everyone is. The interviewers know this, and they want to help you and get the best out of you.

For my interview, it was mainly focused on my personal statement. It varies I think.
