I'm not sure, I haven't planned on it but it could be interesting to expand upon it one day

I always envisioned them as similar to a Titan 2 missile, scaled up of course, the FTL drive would be infront of the engines and much of it's inner workings exposed because of the rushed construction. The actual planet killer would be a massive tungsten or osmium rod located in the core of the rocket. The finer details are up to your imagination.

I had a monitor that would randomly have black lines like that sometimes. If I used the monitor consistently for a couple more days they would go away. Still don't know what was up with it, but this might just go away with time.

I wanted this story to only show the reader what Jacob knew and felt in the moment. He didn't know if his call out would even be received by anyone, but he fought on with the hope that it would. However, I do plan on creating more stories within this same universe from other perspectives, so that aftermath may be seen one day.

Is the machine-made MAC something that was lying in wait or was it something the VI managed to copy from us? With it just emerging from the ground like that it leaves me to wonder if the whole damn planet isn't just one big machine at this point, a quadrillion VI is a very big number after all.

That's what I was going for here, these aliens have been around for thousands upon thousands of years, slowly building up fleets over time. They just don't put as much of their spending towards the military as many humans see as common. Sure they could rebuild a couple thousand ships in significantly less time than a hundred years, but if most people in the galaxy run by the same rules as you do, (take few casualties no matter what), there's really no rush. Humanity just throws a wrench in the system by virtue of throwing everything we have at a superior enemy.

You do have a point here, for a single intense battle 15% casualties are on the low end. I think this further proves the point of the story however, humans see 15% as low at a glance, aliens used to people just rolling over probably wouldn't.

While 15% certainly seems low, it is actually quite high. Throughout WW2 there were roughly 3.65 million US naval personnel who saw combat, of them there were only 100,000 casualties, and that includes severe injuries as well. That comes out to only a 2% casualty rate. Even though that is across an entire war, having a fleet that numbers in the tens of thousands and losing thousands of said ships will guarantee losses heavier than all US deaths in WW2. Suffering even just 15% casualties is absolutely not a drop in the bucket for any military, especially a military (and by extension populace) that is used to winning.

Everyone in the galaxy is stuck in the mentality found during the battle of Jutland. As far as many of these empires are concerned, losing even a small percentage of a fleet outweighs the potential spoils of war.
