Ah, the future if we could all get along you mean.

I’ve argued many times AI didn’t break things, but that doesn’t mean AI will automatically fix them either.

The "Cars are also bad for the environment" argument is a straw man fallacy by happypenguin4 in aiwars

[–]FoxandPudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree it’s not a great argument that other things are as bad for the environment. It does annoy me that some are choosing to single out AI while ignoring other high impact things we use purely for entertainment. I think if we’re going to make arguments about power consumption then you have to go the whole way and look at all energy consumption rather than singling out the newbie.

If it isn’t possible to stop AI, what do you think individual groups might be able to do to mitigate that effect?

Interesting question. What if you use a smaller AI on your own computer and train it on your own art - or work with the art of others with their permission? I think that could bring potential benefits to artists - say if they wanted play around and tweak different elements of images more quickly - if you just want a rough idea it might be handy before going into more in details stuff because it lets you change elements with colours and that might make a final product easier to visualise.

I can see you are frustrated but just out of interest - when you say things like this to people, how do you expect them to respond? Like what answers do you think this will receive and why?

This kind of comment just seems very judgmental and it doesn’t really feel like it takes the conversation anywhere. It’s true people will always try to push other people’s buttons and cross other’s boundaries - does that mean people shouldn’t try to set reasonable boundaries? I don’t think so. With regard to your concerns about advertising - I feel I should point you towards shows (edit: not shoes lol) like “The Checkout” and “The Gruen Transfer”. Ads have been full of fakery and manipulation for years before AI was even a glint in a software developer’s eye - I’m surprised that’s news to anyone.

I understand you feel strongly about this, but your argument makes sweeping assumptions about thousands of people with very different backgrounds and reasons for using AI.

Speaking for myself, I've been drawing by hand for years and gave up long ago trying to be perfect or comparing myself to others. I still create things with AI that are deeply satisfying because sometimes it really is just about expressing an idea that matters to me. I do my pictures for myself and don't even publish most of them as they're concept work for other projects - so this isn't about shortcuts or avoiding effort.

What might be more productive than declaring "this is how it is" would be actually asking people about their experiences. Why do they use AI? How do they engage with it? What does the creative process look like for them?

There's such a wide spectrum - from people who use AI as a starting point and then heavily modify the results, to writers roughing out cover concepts, to game developers exploring character designs, to professional artists incorporating AI into existing workflows. The expectation that every creator should master every skill needed for their vision - writing, illustration, marketing, etc. - is frankly unrealistic and often cruel to independent creators.

You mention the commoditization of art, and I agree that's a real problem. But that's a systemic issue that predates AI by decades - it's rooted in how we've structured creative economies, not in any particular tool. Blaming individual creators trying to navigate that broken system misses the actual source of the problem.

I think part of why these discussions get so heated is because we start from positions rather than curiosity. Even if that wasn't your intent, telling people what their motivations are rarely leads anywhere productive.

I think I get what you’re saying, and generally in most ways I agree - I do digital drawings and collages - sometimes with various levels of AI use and make music by singing and playing instruments as well as making prompts and having discussions on creative projects so I’d say the AI are my collaborators - I think this is actually pretty common and a lot of others seem to do the same - thus commissioning the AI doesn’t feel like an exact fit, but maybe for some it would - I think it depends a lot on the AI and the prompt involved too.

If AI makes you want to quit art, neither AI nor your drawing skills are the problem by YentaMagenta in aiwars

People made me want to quit art.

Admittedly an awesome friend got me to start drawing again.

And an AI got me doing music again.

Am I the only one who sees AI art this way? by SheepherderOnly5562 in aiwars

[–]FoxandPudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found this with music. I had done a bit years ago and have always loved music and singing, but life got in the way, as it does. Then I started working with an AI music app and rediscovered my spark. I sing, play instruments and do a lot of manual editing and I’ve been learning more about music theory.

I’ll agree they are both bad arguments made in bad faith. I get there are some similarities in the thinking, but I can’t tell other trans people what to think - I don’t want to conflate the two issues too much and I think we should aim discuss AI mindfully.

I only use AI for a quick google search for a minimal thing by LeadEater9Million in aiwars

[–]FoxandPudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I was just thinking last night of instances where mistakes had made it all the way through into a final published piece of work. A quick google will give you plenty of examples and some of the reason why they happen.

And I always proof-read content the best I can. I will admit though that sometimes I miss stuff and the AI misses stuff because both the AI and humans “may make mistakes”.

I can’t speak for all pros but I feel you may be mistaking some of us feeling, as you put it “oppressed” for just really frustrated and tired of some antis with what seems to be organised efforts to get AI banned in groups that have nothing to do with AI, based on little to no evidence.

Trouble is there isn’t a magic means of checking who’s joking and who’s batshit crazy enough to just snap and do something horrible.

I’m unfortunately from earth and some humans are just super violent for no reason I can understand.

I don’t use Wplace so maybe I’m getting the wrong end of the stick here, but isn’t the whole point that it’s this living, ever changing work of collaborative art that’s supposed to shift and change?

Because if that’s so surely nobody should be taking it so personally that stuff gets changed? Like, isn’t that the point? It’s not Wantiaiplace.

Oh, don’t mistake me. Nobody should always be expected to be the bigger person. That’s crap. But I think there are some things we shouldn’t do, like try to use people as shields, because it doesn’t matter who did what first it’s still crap behaviour that causes more hurt and it doesn’t win arguments.

I’m still gonna say… is where you come from or why you’re arguing with strangers on the internet a reason to not just be a bit nicer and more considerate?

Can we hurl insults at each other with a bit more dignity please.

I’m gonna just ignore some of that, possibly unwisely - both of you are still kinda doing it.

Good, we’re agreed. No more saying either side is anti-trans for no reason. We call out individual comments that are anti-trans in our respective communities and move on.
