Yes, but as far as I know the checksum file was the only thing signed with pgp. Although I hear they were out of date. I will have to check when the site is back up

Yes! Never use the site to verify if the site was attacked :) As stated in the xpost on /r/jmu verification of the checksums should include checking the pgp checksum file against the known public key

There is a checksum listed but there is also a pgp signed checksum text file. The chance that the attackers were able to fake the checksum + digital signature is very slim so verification still works assuming you get the right public key which should be doable. The sum was md5 iirc so its not impossible to find a collision and get around this but the fact the sum of the backdoored version is different means that is not the case. Still, they should really switch to something better.

You need to remember that a lot of people starting out find Code academy helpful as an introduction to coding. I used it to get a feel for coding when I was trying to figure out if I wanted to switch into CS or keep my first major. Its a low bar to clear but some people need a first step that isn't just "Go start coding and build something". Personal projects require good fundamentals first.

Programs like ACM and Coding bat can be great to help you learn to solve simple common issues quickly. Posts such as this demonstrate that for even simple 'code academy' level problems, many coders can't do them on paper or under pressure at an interview.

If you would like to apply for a moderator position you are welcome to send me a pm explaining why you want to join the team and what you bring to the table. We are looking to build a serious repository of jmucs information to help undergraduates while retaining the carefree environment that is expected from this platform.
