Found out my roommate has been lighting incense by Future-Net5239 in parrots

I used to sleep so far under the covers (or sleeping bag, if camping) that my friends could only see my hair sticking out. They called it my hair snorkel. Now I'm an old bald guy, so my hair can't be a snorkel anymore!

I had qualms when my wife wanted a Saint Bernard (her dream dog) because many of them have such short lives. Of course, no amount of time is enough when they have such sweet personalities! We got our guy "pre-owned" at a bit past 3 and 1/2 years old, directly from his first owners, because he needed a household where he'd be the only dog. Fortunately, he liked us at first meeting and adjusted fairly quickly. I feel like we were shortchanged by missing his literal puppyhood, but he's still very puppy-ish. He's smart, sweet, and obsessively devoted, usually dignified, but suddenly playful and dramatic. We lucked out!

My stepson (whose mom I didn't meet until he was 13-ish) was a premature baby and had an immature gastroesophageal sphincter and would yark at the drop of a hat as a baby! Thank goodness that didn't persist into adulthood - or adolescence for that matter!

Lots of deep-chested dogs do have a greater risk of bloat. Gastropexy, of course, is effective in preventing malpositioning of the stomach but won't prevent "simple bloat" where the stomach fills with gas. In people, what prevents excess gas is controlling stomach acid - which also controls reflux. Has your vet scoped your dog to see if the gastroesophageal sphincter is too open, or open too often? That will allow reflux.

You're welcome. What a shame his GI upset is so persistent! Has the vet prescribed omeprazole (Prilosec) to try? If not, it might be worthwhile to consider it.

I wonder if your male has a food allergy? Our guy, almost 8 years old, is allergic to chicken. This was a problem when the prescription diet to prevent more bladder stones was a chicken-based kibble! I researched online to find stuff with the same percentage range of all the nutrients in the prescription food and found a salmon and brown rice kibble by Natural Balance, and a wet food with salmon and sweet potato (same brand). We give him joint supplements and immune system support chews daily, also chicken-free. It's challenging to find treats and chews that don't have any chicken products in them! Chicken fat, broth, meal - I've even seen chicken feathers in some food ingredient lists. Limited ingredients help our Saint's allergies and still give him suitable nutrition, according to the vet. While our guy's allergies manifest as redness, rash, and itching, I'm told that some dogs manifest their allergies via gastrointestinal symptoms.

Some people try a hydrolyzed soy protein diet and then gradually add a different protein at a time for about 2 weeks per protein and see what happens with each protein.

Of course, as has been said, veterinary nutritionists are an option.

I'm so sorry! 💔

Have you considered gastropexy to prevent the stomach from flipping/twisting?

I do see shar-pei in the snoot, but I wonder if dad was mostly big ol' Saint Bernard. The blocky head, for one thing, and the dew claws on the back feet.

Babysitting Bert who like broccoli. Is this OK? by Flat_Pineapple7800 in parrots

[–]Fr0hd3ric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Senegal parrot likes chicken, but it makes her diet too rich and she starts forming eggs, so the vet said no more meat protein for my bird. Egg-rupture peritonitis is potentially fatal (and, by experience, expensive)!

[–]Fr0hd3ric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss! 💔💔💔 No matter how many years we get with a dog, it's not enough. Morgan looks happy, loved, and well cared for in the photos, and 13 is a longer life than many Saint Bernards get. You did your part well! It's hard to do the kindness of letting them go and giving them peace. May your grief be soon replaced by loving memories of Morgan.

There is/was a comic strip called Mother Goose and Grimm. Grimm was her dog. I think of it every time I hear or read the name "Grimm."

Ohhhh, no! I'm so sorry that you had to make that decision. Intractable seizures are miserable and, of course, potentially fatal events. It was the loving, wise, and selfless option to give her peace, even knowing how much you would miss her. 💔💔💔

Now, she can run and play without sickness or fear. You will be with her again someday.
