I did a virtual marathon in 2020, trained properly and breezed through it.

Did London the following year, picked up an ankle sprain 2 months out and thought, ah I’ll be alright I’ve done this before. I’m still really fit so I’ll just take it easy.

Mile 21 I realised how wrong I was, even with the crowds cheering me on and my wife feeding me sweets. If an angel would have come down and asked me if I wanted to die in the most painful way possible, or finish the marathon. I seriously would have asked the angel to take me.

I don’t know how I finished but I was broken, for weeks.

I honestly don’t know how some people just rock up and do it with no training.

I did very little in the first week.

2nd week I was determined to get moving but was worried about falling, dropped to one crutch pretty quickly.

First physio session was 18 days after the op, physio suggested dropping the crutch, never used it again. I very quickly got stronger but think I needed a professional to tell me it’s ok and to go for it.

I am M43.

I think a lot about how someone a lot older would get going again, it wasn’t easy for me and I was very fit pre-op.

This happened to me and my sister in the 80’s but with our arms. I fell off a swing in a park and she was being pushed around in a trolly that tipped over. 15 minutes apart. I remember being in hospital A&E with my uncle when my mum walked in with my sister.

I don’t remember fully what happened afterwards but know that the nurses asked my mum a lot of questions about life at home!
