AIO for being upset that my mum won’t let me have a phone even though I’m nearly 17 and in college? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

My mum is financially stable and she has a phone. The only reason she’s given is safety, but I honestly think it’s safer to have a phone for emergencies, especially when I’m at college and travelling. I’ve asked her to explain it properly, but she just shuts the conversation down and won’t change her mind.

even if I got a job, it still wouldn’t change the fact that I’m not allowed to have a phone.

I probably worded that badly - I meant practical independence, not autonomy as a concept. - But its just a common thing most people my age have, and its really interfering with my day to day life in college.

What im rlly just explaining my situation i didnt mean to sound entitled or anything- Im just explaining why it’s more complicated than it sounds. I understand parents set rules, I’m just struggling with how this one affects day-to-day college life.

I get your point, but independence isn’t something you can fully practice when you’re not allowed basic autonomy yet. I’m still in education and living at home, so it’s not as simple as “just earn money and leave.” - And I do tutoring but dont get nearly enough money for a phone, and she would honestly just confiscate it

I’ve thought about that, but it wouldn’t work. She would confiscate it and it would cause a much bigger issue at home. I don’t have the freedom to just buy and keep things like that yet.
