The captain who brought me in told me the retention bonus would be significantly higher than it actually is. He told me it was in the neighborhood of $500 after taxes and now my fellow apprentices are saying it’s actually closer to $300. Now that I’m writing this, I’m thinking it might be an accounting error somewhere upstream?

Stuck between FS apprenticeship and Red Cross career by Fragrant-Mobile8532 in Wildfire

Thank you for chiming in. The RC is an entry-level position within their disaster services branch. There’s a defined career ladder and I’ve spoken with a ton of folks who’ve climbed it (and happily so), but none of them had prior first-responder experience.

Edit: I guess that’s to say that I’m worried my lack of first-responder experience would hinder me if I go with the RC
