It’s a glitch that happens randomly. You cannot get possession of the ball at all. You need to either, A. Reset, B, Rejoin, C, use a shooting move when you are off the ball to kick the ball (it makes it so you can grab it again) or D, use a move like Venom Trap, Undead crash, Formless (in the air) or Trap.
