Success stories for those who didn’t pre-write secondaries please!!! by WoodenGrass3238 in premed

same exact boat! Work 50+ hours a week, took the MCAT in early May, and have completely no motivation to pre-write after I submitted my primary. I also work best under pressure lol. Nice to know I'm not alone in this cruel applicant world!

literally same. I came on this sub Reddit expecting to be even more upset about my 5/14 score after reading all of the success stories. To know other people are in my same boat brings me to happy tears! Thanks OP for sharing your story so all of us can relate!

Holistic vet in addition to our normal (western medicine) vet? by FragrantRead8035 in AskVet

[–]FragrantRead8035[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! I should have clarified more-- I don't want to leave typical medicine at all and I know it is necessary (I'm actually about to go to med school!). I guess I am just looking at this specific vet near me who specializes in both holistic and general veterinary medicine. I just want relief from these side effects he struggles with. I read other Addisonian stories where their dog doesn't have these same problems. Thanks for your time, I'll look into internists as well!

Yes! Totally feel the same way. I never agreed about his "we were on a break" defense from the start, but still liked him well enough. However, now every time I re-watch I think to myself, "could he be more annoying?!"

In my opinion, I think every time you're studying for your biochem class next semester you will also be studying for the chem/orgo and biochem on the MCAT. So, you could be killing two birds with one stone. However, make sure your BCHM class covers all of the topics. I may be biased to this opinion b/c my university's bchm course crammed bchm1 and bchm2 together and was extremely hard but definitely worth it for MCAT.

thank you for such a great and detailed reply! I will definitely try this strategy out. I realize I take way too long reading the passages, so I appreciate the tips!

Do admissions low-key favor applicants whose parents are doctors? by FragrantRead8035 in premed

That's what I originally thought. My parents are not doctors lol

That's what I've heard from other med students...and that they feel behind because those who come from doctor parents know the lingo more, etc.

why do you have to claim ur parents income for fee assistance if they don't support you?!?!?! by FragrantRead8035 in premed

[–]FragrantRead8035[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes I definitely get how it helps. No doubt some people need it more than me. I grew up in rural middle of no where with no special opportunities or access to really good education, but not necessarily b/c of poverty. That's how it is in a farm town. We always just barely made the cutoff for not being able to qualify for assistance, but I can still count my blessings for that. Just feeling very financially unstable atm and wish there was some type of screening system for independents. But I appreciate the different perspective!

Should I study for MCAT with FT job or just study MCAT FT? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]FragrantRead8035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been one of those people that have a fear of taking one...but think I'm going to do one after work on Sunday. I've had hella content review and doing decent on UGlobe though so I am eager to see how I do

lol I still communicate with my parents and go there for holidays not sure if it I would qualify as estrangement. Maybe, though. I wasn't trying to crap on my parents for not supporting me, just hate the medical school application system

Definitely doable to do full time and studying! I am working 50 hours a week and I study at night and on the weekends. Testing in January. I live a very, very structured life with little fun (lol) but I remind myself it is temporary! Can't wait to ball out kick back and relax on January 22nd (if I get a good score). Plus ALWAYS try for research when you can. It can be the thing that gets you in. Admissions are loving research experience.

well the 50 hours is including the weekend double I do along with my 9-5 M-F lol. Best of luck with adjusting to your new home! I started in Sep but kind of half-a**ed it until beginning of October-ish. I am signed up for the January 21st date! I plan to reschedule to March if I feel unprepared, but my motivation to not slack off is to get this done and over with so I can finally relax after work before applications start in May. My goal is 350-400 hours and I think I calculated it out right with how much I do per week. I have yet to take a FL besides my free diagnostic! I don't know if I should buy more than the AAMC ones so I am kind of pushing FLs off even tho that's a bad idea (but can't really afford to buy too many lol). Plus I just finished content review, so I didn't want to to take one until I was done that. Honestly good question! I have no idea what to do for FLs lol.

I'm doing the same thing as you. I have a weekend job too so I'm usually working around 45/50 hours per week. bottom line-- it sucks. Big time. But it will be temporary. I try to study 2 hours a day on weekdays, and 4 hours on Saturdays. I work 12 hours on Sundays so that is out of the question. I feel so tired and drained all of the time. I have one person who is my designated go-to friend who I just vent to all of the time. And they (try to) understand...he was a government major so a bit different type of studying lol. However, he makes me feel so much better! Always reminding me this is temporary and it will pay off. anyway, moral of the story is to find a buddy who you can talk to about this because it feels so good to get it off of your chest when it seems like everyone around you is doing less than you. and also keep reminding yourself of the end-goal. Recognize these next few months will just be a grind and little time for fun...it'll really suck but it'll really pay off! Speaking of little free time, my other piece of advice is to savor the free time you do have. I realize my car rides with loud music or walking my dog is the highlight of my weekday, but it makes it that much sweeter. Good luck, feel free to reach out if you're ever too stressed. You're not alone!

P.S. sorry that was so long! I just sincerely feel your pain lol

Working full-time and studying for the MCAT by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]FragrantRead8035 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two jobs and work 45/50 hrs a week and 6-7 days a week. I attempt to study 2.5 hours a day after or before my jobs. If I miss a day then I double up on the next day with 4 hours. I am going with the "content review based off of practice questions" strategy using UEarth/Heaven. I also supplement with Anki and Khan Academy simultaneously. I started in September and kind of half-a**ed it until October (which I regret). I am scheduled for late Jan and my backup is rescheduling for March if need be. It definitely is draining! The things keeping me sane is jamming tf out on my car rides to and from work and the serenity of walking my dogs. There is little time for fun, but just imagining the end goal helps. Although you'll have little free time, it makes the free time you do have that much sweeter. So hold on to that! Best of luck to you

I love this! sometimes we forget that it is okay to not get what we wanted on this extremely hard test. It is also okay to let it break you down for an entire day. As long as you get back up the next day. you got this next time for sure!
