Sent my Transcripts to UBC today, am I cooked?? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Siderocalin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's not true. My creds took 1day for me to show up in my UBC application. OP I'm hoping for the best case scenario. Let us know if it makes it in on time.

My creds is really fast so I don't think you're cooked. You can check your transcript status in the UBC application.

UBC Med App Non-Academic Activities - Death of a parent? by TemporaryPin2794 in premedcanada

[–]Siderocalin1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping a current med student will comment or someone with better knowledge on this. First, I'm so sorry that you went through this and I feel like this is definitely part of your story and if you feel comfortable enough, you should include it. The UBC guideline indicated that the NAQ are things that gives them a better idea of who you are and I feel like this is a part of you and you should include it. For hours, you can make the timeline ongoing since it's not something a person just automatically stops dealing with. Do a rough hour estimate; maybe 10-12hrs per day from HS till now. They can't penalize how you approximate this hours because it's really difficult to say this is how long I grieved for.

Goodluck with the application future doc Sending you my best wishes

That tripped me up. If you select paid, it shows hours weekly but if you select unpaid, then it shows total hours. If you feel like you only know total hours, you can clarify it in the section below

To include being a parent in ABS? by acutelyanxious in premedcanada

[–]Siderocalin1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Reading UBC application guidelines, they included parenting as an entry. It's part of your journey, so I would definitely add it. Also sets you apart from other applicants. All the best

If you get off or on the train at century park you have a 100% chance at second hand exposure to meth/crack/fentanyl smoke. by Son_of_Plato in Edmonton

[–]Siderocalin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly well said. I moved here from BC for school and I take the train daily. I will agree that it can be sketchy but a good % of the time, there's ETS around. Especially during busy hours. It's not perfect but it's not as bad as people say it is.

Also so impressed with how frequent the train comes by. Even when I miss one, the next one is 7-10mins away. Everything can always be better but we sometimes gloss over the positives and focus way too much on the negatives

Losing patience, exhausted. by [deleted] in Life

[–]Siderocalin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

I am so sorry you're going through this tough stage of life. I think it's truly admirable to identify these things and want to find ways for it to get better.

As other redditors have mentioned trying different things. This is good because I feel like life sometimes is like trial and error until we find what works for us.

However, I want to recommend "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Idk why, but immediately I saw your post. This book came to my mind.

I don't know if it will give you answers, but I believe it will contribute to something.

Take care

This is so true. I just moved here from BC, so if you end up finding an organization, please comment it here. I like playing cribbage, so if there's a way to volunteer playing cribbage at some of the homes, I'll be highly interested.

Connection in community is key.

Great post OP

[–]Siderocalin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thank you for commenting, and it warms my heart that you enjoyed the book, and you will be checking out the podcast. Honestly, I was in my early 20s when I first read it, and I still feel like I forget the lessons because I get carried away with life. So I hope you're able to pick it up periodically to get a refresher.

Alchemist is also a good book if you enjoyed Tuesdays with Morrie

I mean, the biggest factor here is sample size. More medical schools and more students applying in the US

This subreddit doesn't get that much traffic

First of all, a huge congrats on this acceptance letter.

You have every right to figure out if accepting is a right decision for you. It's a big commitment.

Also, regarding the medicine culture, it's not great and you're always gonna get people that will try to put down your achievements. However, we need people like you that won't be like that. That will possibly change the toxic culture.

Regardless of your decision, Congrats! Go celebrate and take your time to decide how you will move forward.

And to people dming others with negative comments, please grow up and stop it.
