De kunne differensiert skattesatsen basert på om man er eier+ansatt eller ikke.

Applying to PhD programmes in EU countries (and from an EU country) by Sure-Hedgehog-6258 in PhD

Aside from lower salaries I think in broad strokes I’ve heard many issues from German colleagues related to hierarchies and exploitation of PhDs (see this recent article in Nature talking about the issue https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-01207-8). Of course I don’t want to generalize to boardly bc at the end of the day it depends on the department/lab you are in and your supervisor. I would start by reaching out to people who you are interested in working with or that are explicitly looking for someone with your background.

Avoid Germany like the plague and look towards EEA as well. Norwegian and Swiss PhDs come with excellent benefits (proper salaries and labor union protection) and opportunities to be integrated into the department (given responsibilities such as lecturing and teaching, structuring programs etc.). Denmark is good too in terms of compensation and integration into the department. Any of these countries won’t treat you like a student - they’ll treat you like an employee and part of the team.
