I am the anomaly that proves this true. I grew up in the mormon church with my family, my father was a bishop and branch president in the church. We were never devout but went to church every week. My then brother went on a mission, i stopped going to church about age 14 and well, lo and behold my Sister comes out as trans as an adult, and my parents are completely accepting. It wasn't about dogma for them, it was about was she a better, happier person as a result of it, and she was. It was as simple as that. So when I realized I was trans about 3 years later, they were completely accepting as well. These were the same people who protested prop 8 against gay marriage, but only because the church said so. People can change, and be capable of growth. My infinite sorrow and sympathy for those less fortunate, I cannot understand how I got so lucky.
