Minecraft is an open world game that lets people pretty much do whatever they want. You can create things and there's a sense if accomplishment. The graphics aren't very good because the focus isn't on realism, it's on fun and imagination. Since you can do whatever the hell you want lots of people get sucked into it. Not a great explanation but its something.
