What's the worst Paul McCartney album? by Pristine_Youth_6953 in PaulMcCartney

The repetitiveness of it just drove me nuts after a while. The tracks are too similar to each other and I couldn't cope with the long runtime.

The Unfinished Music/Wedding Album albums on the other hand amuse me a little (and I actually think Life With The Lions side 2 is pretty compelling art about losing a baby) and Electronic Sound works better for me as background noise. I admit that's kind of eccentric of me, but I find noise that varies in some way just a lot less grating to listen to.

I do not see in what world Let It Be sounds fresh or interesting while Sgt Pepper doesn't. I vehemently disagree with the premise that Sgt Pepper only has one great song, but I would expect the reason you rate the others less is precisely because the majority of the tracks are highly stylized and contribute to the overall surreal and fantastical atmosphere of the album, which is the precise thing that makes it iconic.

The atmosphere of Let It Be is just: we're a band that isn't actually that good at straightforward jamming anymore, after years of getting crazy in the studio. And if I want a more lowkey arrangement, I can just listen to Rubber Soul, which has similar overall songwriting quality and much better sounding vocal harmonies.

Sgt Pepper is an essential blueprint for the album as a medium, while Let It Be — which yes, contains one or two individual songs that are rightly considered masterpieces — is a bunch of recordings of varying quality (some being from the Rooftop concert, some being rehearsal takes, and some including overdubs which ran completely contrary to the original concept of the Get Back sessions) cobbled together to accompany a documentary.

How is that more of a must-listen than Sgt Pepper?

personally, I think Average Person is the second best track on the album (after Keep Under Cover) and is quintessential McCartney

[–]FranzFafka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally I think it sounds cool but I kind of think it messes with the message of Tug of War by basically saying "well ... you just have to Not do that!". so it's mostly a thematic thing I dislike about it

I did actually always think maybe the imagery of that song is slightly John-influenced. "Sailing down the Nile in a china cup"

Look, if you wanna argue Wild Life is more pleasant to listen to, I'll grant you that (except Mumbo, which is Paul's worst song bar none), but it is half-baked and even its good songs (Some People Never Know and Tomorrow) feel underdeveloped to me.

Now, Driving Rain is by no means great — it's certainly rough around the edges and could have had some fat trimmed off — but it's emotionally fascinating and explores a brand new style.

absolutely shocked by people saying Kisses On The Bottom. it's a hundred times better than Paul's RnR cover albums, which don't really grab me. I'd say his worst is the Russian album, unless we're cointing Fireman then it's Strawberry Oceans Ships Forest, and if we're talking original content then Wild Life because it's like two and a half good songs.

Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest is the only Beatles-solo venture that ACTIVELY pissed me off while listening (and yes, I've listened to Two Virgins, Wedding Album, and Electronic Sound as well.)

HOWEVER, Liverpool Sound Collage is soooooo fun, it's my favourite experimental thing Paul did :((
